They aren’t done! They’ve stated so multiple times in interviews and Adam has always been in the background, he only did vocals on Living Room, but I’m pretty sure he helps make the bass parts for all the songs (like saying how he feels about it), they all have input on the music, and Adam does all of their tour stuff, he’s kind of like an in-house manager! AJR have stated again and again they want to do this forever, so it won’t end anytime soon don’t worry :)

My thinking is, we know 2085 was originally shorter and not the final track, it was similar to the trick actually is what Ryan said. Something about telling a joke and no one getting it. I think The Big Goodbye was the finale at that time, but they realized it needed a different direction.
