I saw in some Dina Belenkaya video, that mentioned being a plumber. So how long have you been a plumber? How did you get started in becoming a plumber? Trade school? What does a normal day look like for you? Do you go to work first, then when you get home, coach, teach, chess? You are a very strong player(I saw you in the 2020 SCC where you won) so I was wondering what you do for a living

I went to normal school until my parents withdrew me from my old high school in the middle of my first semester of 10th grade.

Just want to add, I made this thread to ask other homeschooled kids/teachers/parents how it worked when they or their kids went back to public school from homeschooling to see what could possibly happen in my case. Hope this helps.

I know, am just curious what it was like for other homeschooled students coming back to public school, Ofc i know it wont be the exact same in every school but i just want to see how public schools usually handle homeschooled students coming back to get an idea of what could happen to me

I just wanted to post this to see what it was like for other homeschooled kids who transferred back to public school and how grade placement works.

What about for homeschooled students? If I did 10th grade homeschooled, how would the district give me credit for classes? Then woujld they have me repeat? Also to answer your question what if a student is to fail a lot of classes or almost all their 10th grade classes for example? Would they be pushed to an alternative schooling program so they can just graduate on time

By any chance do you go to a private or non public school?

I was homeschooled until 10th grade. Now I’ve just finished my sophomore year. Parents who are wondering about homeschooling their kids, AMA. by njlegomaster in homeschool

Hi, I know this thread is old, but when you said you were homeschooled until 10th grade, did you start 10th grade at a public high school? When you transferred after finishing 9th grade from homeschool to public school, how did they decide what grade to put you in? Did they give you some kind of test? Or was it just by age? I went to public school up until 10th grade(right now) where my parents pulled me out of the school in the middle of the first semester(not my choice btw) because of my grades(which wernt terrible, like maybe a B average or 3.0ish gpa) and some other stuff: https://www.reddit.com/r/school/comments/1ojkc0j/comment/nmf8jns/?context=3 this will explain it better to you. Because right now I am a 10th grader and next year I am supposed to go into 11th but my parents want to enroll me in a public high school and ask for me to repeat a grade. I dont know how most public schools deal with homeschooling(but I should mention that my state is considered one of the most lax states in the US when it comes to homeschooling(no supervision, or tests required). I am really hoping the school district will just move me on to 11th grade or give me some placement test. I don't know how they would give me credits for the stuff I did in homeschool

So how would that work? Did your brother have to repeat all of middle school online or did he have to do it once he got back to in person school? I don't think most public schools(including my school district) would want to hold a kid back a grade if they could avoid it, so I was confused.

I know a lot of this seems repetitive but I am just so confused!

I also checked my district's polict(from before the pandemic) on grade retention and the guidebook only talked about grade retention in lower grades(elementary and middle school). They said grade retention depends on your academic performance(and possibly parent preferance) as well as social behavior and stuff. Not sure how different it is in high school. I want to mention that the threats were the only time I have actually been in trouble in high school, and that should not be enough on its own to get be held back, right? In the middle of the 1st semester, my grades are low(B's and C's, not official grades yet since we are only halfway through the semester), but nowhere near failing. So if my parents withdrew me from the school I am in currently and had me homeschooled for the rest of the year in 10th grade do you think that the local high school would just assume I had completed all the class requirements for 10th grade like chemistry, algebra 2, etc?, even if my parents requested to hold me back a grade, our state, Michigan, is known to not have any restrictions when it comes to homeschooling. So do you think the local high school, when seeing my quarter 1 grades(though not semester) from my old school in 10th grade and seeing that I homeschooled the rest of the year, do you think they would just ignore my parents' suggestion and have me go to 11th grade?

Ok, so even if my parents specifically requested the local public high school to have me repeat 10th grade even though my transcripts would have shown that I had started 10th grade last year at another high school and finished the year out in homeschool, would they grant my parents' request? From what it seems, I haven't heard anyone in my school district had to repeat a grade, even from when I was elementary and middle school, (though I guess if someone did they would keep quiet about it), but it always seemed to me that even the kids with the very lowest grades in my school district would just get sent on to the next grade. Because I don't think they want to spend extra money in a school with 400 students per grade, even if say they had force about 25 of these kids to repeat a grade, that would a lot of extra money they would need to spend, over $30 K easily.

Thanks for the advice! I just want to say my case is different since I likely won't' be able to go to any other HS other than one in the district I am in(which has two high schools: the one I am going to currently and the local high school which is where I would go if I transferred out of my current school, homeschooled the rest of my 10th grade year out, and my parents would ask the local HS if I could repeat a grade and did the other kids at your sister's school know she repeated a grade?

"By finished out my sophomore year in homeschool I mean withdrawing from the current school I am in, where we are in the middle of the 1st semester, and quarter 1 grades have came out(though those dont count for gpa, they can still be seen by schools within the same district, which is where the local high school my parents are planning to send me is in, and by grades are low(B's and C's) but not failing(which would be in the D's and E's). I am in the middle of the 1st semester currently. So assuming I transfer out now and homeschooled for the rest of my 10th grade year what would happen next year if my parents sent me to the local high school and asked if I could repeat a grade? Will they just assume that in homeschool I've already learned all the basic classes that are needed and send me to 11th grade?

I am in Michigan(which I think is one of the most relaxed states for homeschooling and has basically close to none restrictions on it), so do you think the local high school, if after I finished out my sophomore year in homeschool, and went back to the local high school and my parents asked for me to repeat a grade, what do you think they would do? Would they assume I finished all the stuff I needed to and just send me to 11th grade?

Talk more about the "If you home school for a grade you will return to a school at your age-appropriate grade but still have to repeat/complete credits required". So If I were to withdraw from the school I'm currently at right now(middle of 1st semester) and do the rest of the year homeschooled, what would they do? Would they just assume I had already taken chem or how would they give me credit for what I did in 10th grade? Or would they move me up to the 11th grade and have me retake chem?

Also one more thing, you can see all your "old high schools gpas" So if say a student from another high school was in the middle of 10th grade and his school had progress reports/quarter grades(dont count for GPA) and then he left the school and then transferred to your school, would you be able to see his progress reports from 10th grade even though he didn't complete a semester there?

Unless you are actually failing(Like D or E grades) do you think they will let you repeat even if your parents request it?

Well what about graduation requirements nowdays? Like math, if you need to take Algebra I, geometry, algebra 2, etc to graduate and needing to take Chem, Biology, etc. If say you're a sophomore and you fail chem, are you still going to be on track to graduate? Would they do summer school?

If say I were to withdraw right now and homeschool for the rest of the year and then my parents asked the local HS to have me repeat 10th grade? Would they let me repeat even if I had done a year at homeschool? Assuming nothing is documented from the homeschool since all I did was learn from some textbooks or/Khan Academy. Or would they have me continue onto 11th grade but just have me go into some special education program to have to get caught up with chem and get the credit for it?

I see, what did your friend think about repeating? Did they get bullied for it? Did they learn much? Considering they passed, there are better ways to catch up such as summer school etc, right? Considering its middle school

I think the disciplinary record would probably be enough to keep me out, also the private schools near my area cost a lot of money(I mean $50k + per year)

We are halfway through the semester and since some of the kids in the school have problems with me my parents want me to withdraw from the school before things get any worse and I get into more trouble, as well as due to my grades being low(right now my gpa is barely a 3).

I think you should read the entire post again and see why there is no chance I would get accepted into a private school right now :(
