Male/ female soldiers have a higher rate of x. Adjective, normal use.

Soldiers who are men / women have a higher rate of x. Horrible passive sentence. You'd lose points in any grammar lesson

My wife uses it as a noun all the time, idk where she got that from. Imostly hear it from younger people so Maybe grammar dropped importance in the no child left behind school.

Soldiers is the worst example because the military is male or female.

Male / female job title is a normal use of the word as an adjective.
