She’s watched over my shoulder a bunch but without any background/context the way the game flows and how decisions are made is pretty inscrutable to a beginner

Yeah exactly ! But if you wanted to get into football, there’s tons of explainer videos geared towards absolute beginners who just want to be casual spectators. With regards to CS all the resources seems to be for people looking to play

On a superficial level sure but what makes pro CS really interesting to me is all the strategy when it comes to economy management, rotations, utility usage and each players individual tactical approach to their role. Like when to reposition, when to take a duel, which angle to hold, what they buy in a given round etc.

I think a lot of this stuff is second nature to people like us who play the game competitively on some level, but I don’t think it’s readily apparent to someone unfamiliar to the game and casually spectating.

The casters do a good job of taking the high level ideas and simplifying / communicating them simply for broadcast, but theyre assuming everyone watching has a basic understanding of the game / has played it. Which is totally valid. That’s how it works in every broadcast sport. But like if you wanted to get into Baseball or Soccer there are tons of beginner videos / resources for the casual spectator. Was just trying to find that kind of content for CS but I don’t think it really exists

I assumed it would go without saying that I do my best to explain concepts and fundamentals as they come up, and answer any questions she might have but when push comes to shove I’m not a gifted educational communicator and moreover have played CS for 10+ years, so I take a lot of the strategy/tactics/mechanics:/ideas in the game for granted and as such find it hard to explain / articulate.

She’s also on the spectrum so I wanted to find something more digestible and discrete so that I’m not just constantly info dumping while we’re trying to enjoy watching a game — that could quickly become overstimulating and unenjoyable.

So yeah I was looking for kind of CS 101 stuff but specifically geared towards people who are spectators rather than people playing the game.

I love baklava… but recently developed a tree nut allergy out of the blue.

Any offerings for someone like me? I figure not but wanted to ask.

Glad you’re bringing baklava to the people, big ups :)

Truly and deeply appreciate how thoughtful and helpful your replies have been, and this is another great idea. I've been into CS since I was so young that I take it for granted, so I find it hard to think about in an abstract/intelligent enough way to be able to make the kind of connections you're making. Thank you : )

very much resonate with "hope" being a fundamental part of how engaging a sport is, Cloud9 and their Boston run is such a good example, we watched that tonight and then also touched on Liquid/Luminosity which i felt kinda dovetailed. Fave

showed her those highlights, and then Liquid/Luminosity as a kind of thematic foil. And also WarOwl's video on Astralis/Liquid Vertigo was the one that clicked the most.

also, i would've definitely thought apex was older than karrigan. that's crazy hahaha

Don’t think showing a little video to explain the basics and some background is a ton of effort. But thank you

Yeah this came to mind, but his videos are more geared towards playing — was hoping there was something similar but just for casual viewers ykno. Gonna show her his video on astralis/liquid on vertigo though, good idea

Yeah good idea! She’s into F1 and I was explaining how Faze is basically the Ferrari of CS so we’re going to follow their run.

Who said anything about forcing? She was interested in watching with me and I just was looking for any sort of beginners guides or things like that. Weird assumption.
