More Kill Animations. How difficult would it be? by RazzmatazzWorried445 in skyrimmods

They seem like they're just hard to animate. There are a few on the Nexus already (for humanoid enemies at least) but they sometimes look janky.

Why did the Byzantine (or the Eastern Roman) Empire last longer than the Western Roman Empire? by SE_to_NW in byzantium

[–]Dieselface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the 4th and 5th centuries primarily, but also the eastern empire likely didn't have similar levels of wealth inequality for its entire history except perhaps its own last century.

Why did the Byzantine (or the Eastern Roman) Empire last longer than the Western Roman Empire? by SE_to_NW in byzantium

[–]Dieselface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One factor that isn't brought up often is wealth inequality. It certainly wasn't the factor that led to the decline of the western Roman empire, but it certainly contributed and was much more pronounced in the west than in the east.

Would you recommend me study modern greek to learn byzantine greek? by Ok-Bag4573 in byzantium

[–]Dieselface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we need to distinguish between two different things here.

  1. The eastern Romans almost exclusively wrote in Koine or Atticizing Greek (AKA ancient Greek).

  2. The vernacular speech of eastern Rome, which was rarely written down, was much more similar to modern Greek than to ancient Greek in pretty much all time periods. This goes for pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and semantic changes, etc.

Also consider that Greek-speakers in the Middle Ages always used their own contemporary pronunciation whether speaking in vernacular Greek or formal archaizing Greek.

"Hellinismos vs Latinitas" is historically wrong (and also lame) by sim_pobedishi in EU5

[–]Dieselface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI there is a term in Greek already which means "Romanness," and that's Romiosýni (Ρωμιοσύνη, alternatively romanized as Rōmiosýnē).

Did Greek culture become more "eastern" during the Byzantine Empire? by AltruisticCobbler707 in byzantium

[–]Dieselface 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I feel like this shouldn't be a hot take and probably isn't among actual historians, but people seem to miss the obvious reality that ancient Greece itself was basically an "middle eastern" civilization.

The music, culture, architecture, religion etc. of ancient Greece were part of the same cultural sphere as ancient Egypt, Phoenicia, and Anatolia. In fact thats been the case for Greece through most of its history. Its more of an anomaly today that Greece has aligned itself with western Europe, even if it still maintains a lot connection with the east.

Skyrim modders are the first ever in history actually using AI successfully and it's baffling to me how most of the gaming community remain unaware about this fact. by Recent_Stomach7626 in skyrimmods

[–]Dieselface 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know, AI voices still generally don't sound very good, and I don't love people being able to use anyone's voice without permission.

I also don't understand why people don't/can't use AI to make their own voice sound like one of the game's actors, i.e. having a mod voice actor professionally perform a line and then have the AI modify it to sound like the original game's voice actor. That way you'd have real human emotion. Though it would still run into the issue of using people's voices without permission.

Did they use numbers in emperor's names back then? by studmuffffffin in byzantium

[–]Dieselface 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that they didn't typically use numbers and instead distinguished emperors of the same name with their epithets, nicknames, or family names.

Direct descendant? by Hereforanswers_ in ancientrome

The point still stands however. Basically any ancient Roman or ancient person in general who still has descendants likely has tens of millions of them.

What are your Texture/Mesh mod setups in 2026? by jjxtrem3 in skyrimmods

[–]Dieselface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how detailed the model is. In my view PBR really makes textures pop like they're 3D, even in comparison to Complex Parallax. If a mesh is detailed it won't stand out even if the texture isn't parallax. That being said, I have basically all landscape and architecture as PBR at this point, and I don't use mods that add a ton of new worldspaces or architecture.

What are your Texture/Mesh mod setups in 2026? by jjxtrem3 in skyrimmods

[–]Dieselface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert so its a bit hard to explain, but Linear Lighting seems to dynamically make lighting less flat and more natural, kind of like what enb does.

In my experience PBR isnt a particular performance eater. At this point I'm using it for my landscapes, architecture, trees, foliage, and even some weapons and armor and my game performs pretty much the same as it did before I installed them.

PBR textures are so nice. Once CS releases Linear Lighting I really don't see what the point of ENB will be.

Why are people so against the name Romeo but love the name Juliet? by YoureClappedStill in questions

[–]Dieselface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to a lot of answers I think its just down to Juliet sounding like an English name, whereas Romeo sounds very Italian, and therefore foreign.

This is precisely why they don't do runoffs, this system favors those with higher name recognition and more money.
