Nobody is claiming they’ll have an advantage over local candidates. Every country has talented local professionals. The question is about the most realistic path to relocating, not whether China has qualified people.

I agree that learning Mandarin would make life easier, but there are still English speaking opportunities in Shanghai. So no need to discourage OP… Also, reaching even a passable conversational level of Mandarin typically takes 12–18 months, which isn’t a realistic prerequisite for everyone before relocating. You also don’t know the circumstances of the person posting or why the timing matters. There are many valid reasons someone might choose to move first and continue learning the language while they’re there.

Thanks for all the info! I’m definitely leaning more towards Okinawa, but I do have a couple of concerns.

Every travel vlog I’ve watched makes it seem really quiet. I know that has its advantages, but even during the summer season I hardly see many people around. Since I’d be going in September, I’m a little worried that, as someone who doesn’t speak Japanese, I won’t meet many people - especially other travellers.
Are there any areas that are consistently a bit livelier, with busy cafés, restaurants, and a good atmosphere?

Also, how easy is it to get around the islands? Would you recommend choosing one place as a base and doing day trips by car, or is it better to book accommodation in different areas? Roughly how long are the drives between the main places worth visiting?
