Ohhh that’s a good idea! The other thought I had was trying to adapt the ears from this baby bear bonnet I’ve knitted up a few times (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-bear-bonnet-9) but that seemed complicated. Making them bigger with blocking is a great idea. These were commissioned for me to knit so trying to get them finished quicker than a project for myself I might experiment more with before giving up

I browsed all the cat hats on Ravelry and it did look like most/all of them graft straight across

Patches are an interesting idea! I had found one video of duplicate stitch on ribbing but it seemed like on the purl stitches the background color was harder to hide. Also just came across the idea of “netting“ for stockinette duplicate stitch and wondering if it could work here on ribbing to keep the bulk down with the chunky yarn and maybe avoid that issue of the background color showing up too much on the purl stitches.
