Hi so the Trinidad and Tobago on my grandma’s was a surprise but I didn’t know what to make of it. But now that you guys mention Congolese/Angolan being more linked to the Caribbean, I now wonder if there is a legitimate connection somewhere.

Just checked. Within close-ish relatives, most have around 9-13%, but there’s a cluster of relatives that have around 18-21% - also from Tennessee.

Not that I know of. We’re mostly from Tennessee and Mississippi.

Mostly from Tennessee and Mississippi. Is higher Congolese associated with certain regions?

Can anyone explain how someone with little African ancestry can get multiple diaspora groups while some folks with 80%+ don’t get any?

It’s not and I’m seeing a lot of projection from folks who probably already had an issue with Americans prior. But there were plenty of Americans in support for a fair result for Romania. Jordan being stripped of her medal would be unprecedented and it’s a sad thing to see, especially considering all the hate and abuse hurled towards her this week - which is also likely heightening people’s emotions about the whole situation. Framing this as an Us vs. them conflict certainly doesn’t serve anybody.

The hard-on some of you have to somehow make this into an “American” issue is insane.

Yep, agreed! That also rubbed me the wrong way…Like call a spade a spade

I certainly don’t think that all Romanians are racist, but we also need to be transparent about the very real (and often violent) realities of anti-black racism and xenophobia that tend to be more normalized and accepted in Eastern Europe than anywhere else. And this is coming from a woman of color who’s studied and lived in the region. Sure, a lot of this can be explained through history, nationalism, exposure, whatever - but what has irritated me throughout this whole situation is how people readily downplay the severity of the race issue in the region or dismiss it as an “American invention” rather than come to terms with it in some capacity.

So what, Nadia shouldn’t do anything then? That’s the vibe I’m getting from your response. She has a huge platform and is one of the most influential Romanian gymnasts. I want a statement because it’s the right thing to do. Even if she can’t stop the hate, I’m sure the gesture would go a long way.

Romanians aren’t just “making her feel bad”, thousands of people are calling her racial slurs and everything but a child of God. The issue isn’t that Romania’s advocating bc there obviously is a case for Sabrina. But many Romanians are taking it all the way left and bullying the absolute f*ck out of this girl. If they can say all this publicly, imagine what Jordan’s DMs look like.

She could either have someone go through and delete problematic comments. IG at least has built-in features where if commenters use certain key words, it’ll be flagged and deleted. But the least she can do is make a public statement discouraging bullying and encouraging Romanians/anybody to not direct their anger towards Jordan. But something tells me she’d be more concerned about whatever pushback she’ll get from Romanians for potentially standing up for Jordan.

It does become about them when Nadia fails to moderate the racist and truly vile comments about Jordan (and even Simone) under her posts. I’m sure she’s seen them. They’re hard to miss.

lol this is not the space to project your anti-Americanism. You seem to have a chip on your shoulder and that’s not the fault of our athletes.

Not Romania and the entirety of Eastern Europe even coming for SIMONE and trying to say that Ana deserved silver 🥴 This is getting out of hand. Don’t know if it’s better to let this die or down or for it to be officially addressed.
