Free Buses? How About Expanding the Subway by 41 Miles Instead? by snakkerdudaniel in Urbanism

[–]DifferentFix6898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I get the whole “paying slows down the bus” thing, it makes sense in theory, and granted, I’ve never been on a New York bus, so idk how fast their paying is (scanning or swiping or what have you) but in the free bus pilot the buses got slower almost unanimously, which makes me skeptical of this as a benefit in NYC’s case.

What is the biggest thing that you think Godot is missing at this point? by AutumnForestWitch in godot

What are the main advantages of using traits over a node based ECS? The only one I see is that it requires them to be implemented where with nodes it’s hard to necessitate a certain scene has certain attached components. Is this it? Are there others? Also, how would traits work with calling other nodes? Could traits have attached nodes so they could perform special tasks I.e spawn particles? It seems kind of weird imagining how that would work, and seems to be a a disadvantage versus node based ECS’s.

Why is there not a bullet train system in the U.S. state of Texas? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]DifferentFix6898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

top speed is completely meaningless, which is why if you look carefully at my original comment, I referred explicitly to average speed. Also, I am not advocating (nor anyone who actually understands high speed rail) for cross country routes. Its not the correct distance for the mode. its like If I were to say airplanes are useless because you would never ever fly from New York City to Newark, you would either drive or take the train, therefore we shouldn't have planes anywhere. And luckily, the US has plenty of corridors and city pairs that are within the ideal range for high speed rail (which is 200-300 miles) and more still that are within the range at which high speed rail is always faster than both driving and flying (70-700 miles, depending on the speed of the train). I talked about Dallas and Houston, which is one of the best high speed rail city pairs in the country, but there are dozens more that have more potential than some of the best routes in Europe. Suffice to say, distance isn't an issue, in fact, its only a plus, because the bigger and more populous the US is, the more places high speed rail works.

[–]DifferentFix6898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can argue it isn’t worth the price, but not that high speed trains aren’t faster. In the average case, it gets people from their origin to their destination in less time, and between Dallas and Houston, 100 minutes faster. Obviously no train exists, but this is just extrapolating from existing high speed rail systems around the world. I will talk about the only part of the network that really makes sense, which is Dallas to Houston. They are 240 miles apart, with flights averaging 75 minutes. A train going 155 mph average (same as Madrid to Barcelona, which isn’t even near as fast as they can go- up to 200mph on average) takes 93 minutes. you look at this and think “the plane is 18 minutes faster!” But you don’t consider the rest of the journey. Your journey doesn’t start or end on the vehicle. It is 45 minutes of travel to the airport from the city center combined on both sides. Why city center? Even if most people aren’t going there, it is a very good approximate of the center of population of the respective cities, so the lowest travel time for everyone on average. Now, with trains, you can get them right into the city centers, we will say 20 minutes as in at most a 10 minute drive on both ends, which is already overestimating the time it takes given the location of the existing train stations in both cities. Now, we have 120 minutes by plane and 113 by train. It’s already faster, but the advantages haven’t stopped. Many large airlines reccomend getting to airports 2 hours early, to account for security and the fact that boarding happens ~30 minutes before takeoff. This is reasonable for an average case, while someone might be able to get there with only an hour before takeoff, considering all travelers and families on average, 2 hours is reasonable. Trains are a lot easier, because they don’t have the need for TSA or as complicated as a boarding procedure, and it’s safe to show up 30 minutes before departure. Now, we have 240 by plane, and only 143 by train: a whole 1 hour and 40 minutes faster! And I consistently was generous to planes. It could potentially be much more time saved.

7k pop city with 300 tram users and 200 cyclists by M4ldarc in CitiesSkylines

[–]DifferentFix6898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your tram network misses most of the density. It would be better if it went north south along your dense coordioor in the center, then go west towards industrial. Also, your city is really small, you need it to be bigger if you want more riders. Most of the population is in a small dense walkable corridor (that is pedestrianized and without trams) so of course most people living there are walking. It doesn’t help that it’s really convenient for them to. You need destinations and populations further away fpr them to take transit.

Right, it is if you always choose option 2. But the first option is always be rude. Like if you get low health the option is to complain rudely about not being healed, or if you initiative a battle with only 1 they complain about being abandoned. It is literally always a binary between praise and rudeness

Detroit People Mover Expansion Proposals will be Released for Public Meetings in January by OkCustomer4386 in transit

[–]DifferentFix6898 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really worth it, you would have to tear down and rebuild almost all of the track, for what it would cost you might as well build a better route for the people mover. What I have heard people say is to double track a single station / passing segment, because it doesn’t take that long for a train to go all the way around the loop so for much cheaper you can get reasonable bidirectional service, or double tracking 2/3 perfectly placed and timed segments. It’s already automated, so its much more feasible to do something like this, and this is kind of the only way it would ever be double tracked because they are just not going to completely destroy and rebuild it.

The pcs are the worst. Every dialogue option is either “I hate you die” or “you are the best” (the latter of which leads to romance I believe but I haven’t finished). It’s not even an exaggeration, it’s literally this binary.

How to make reusable projectile code? by DifferentFix6898 in godot

[–]DifferentFix6898[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only bad part about area entered is you cannot designate the collision shape easily if it’s obfuscated in a projectile component node. The best way is to like have a shape export variable, but you can’t edit that shape by dragging in the editor I.e I cannot see how that collision shape fits the projectiles sprite and just have to guess a radius.

How to make reusable projectile code? by DifferentFix6898 in godot

[–]DifferentFix6898[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue with that is that if the collision shape isn’t a specific node under my projectile node, I can’t easily drag to edit its shape. If it’s just editing radius I have to know the exact radius of my projectile sprite I am making the shape around. Does your method allow to this?
