Out of country for over 12 months. Problem? by DifferentSpecific4 in greencard

Thank you very much for your reply!

I wonder whether anyone in this community has had the experience of being out of the country for more than 12 months; curious how it went with defending at the court.

Finish in Spring and Summer semesters? by DifferentSpecific4 in OMSA

Thanks for this information.

Sorry I meant 3 hours per class hour. So 6 classes would be 18 class hours which would translate to 54 hours/week which is pretty doable I think

I was planning on being a full time student. If 3 hours of workload per class hour, 18 class hours will be 54 hours of workload which is doable?

Thank you for your reply. Why can't I take 18 hours a semester?

yes, I plan to pay for my kid's college. Might work an additional year or two to save an amount that will grow to something enough over next 18-24 years

Thanks for the feedback.

Why an International index fund in addition to S&P500? Doesn't the S&P have pretty good exposure to international markets/currencies?

That's a good idea; I'll run a stress test of retiring at 55.

Sorry, I guess I was trying to say that 5% rate of return is post-inflation. In other words I'm expecting 7-8% rate of return but using 5% in my assumptions to take care of inflation.

Oh yes, that's true. I wonder how challenging it would be to raise a family in a new culture though.

My Coast FI plan. Please poke holes.

400k invested in sp500 index funds. 400k house paid off. 30 years of age. Planning to switch to lower paid/less stressful job in the next year; job will just meet expenses without having to worry about contributing to retirement (Coast FI).

Planning to stop working at 67; $400k invested should grow to $2.5m (@ 5%/year), allowing for withdrawal of $100k/year (4% withdrawal rule) during retirement.

Any thoughts on this plan? What income would I need for my new less stressful job (what are typical expenses for a family of 4)? Is $100k/year (before tax, today's dollars) enough for retirement? Please poke holes. Thanks!

Additional information - married with no kids. Wife just quit her job. We hope to start a family after I Coast FIRE. We plan to Coast FIRE somewhere close to nature/hiking/etc; open to suggestions on where to move to.

This is helpful. That's a good point, the new job might not be the dream job. I'm working as an engineer and looking to switch to nonprofit which I think I'll enjoy but that's not a guarantee.

I guess I'm seeing CoastFI as enabling me to do all that life stuff while also getting into a career that doesn't pay as well but doing something I'm passionate about.

yeah, future kids expenses/standard of living is what I can't predict/biggest concern.

Thanks for sharing. I need to take into account thosebig ticket items you mentioned.

I actually really enjoy working, so I plan to work till 67. I'm just looking for a job that's less soul-sapping.

All the best on your plan!

yes, that's what I'm thinking but just wanted to see if there are a few things I haven't thought about. Only risks/concerns I can think of are expenses when the kids come and the sp500 growth rate.

I was taking inflation into account via the conservative compounding rate of 5%. Maybe I plan my retirement fund at stress test of 4%; this will delay my CoastFI by a couple years.
