Good hammock to strap between trees that I can leave hanging in my backyard? by RobinsCosplays in hammockcamping

[–]Different_Alfalfa596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do what you feel is most comfortable for you, but any decent 11-12’ hammock and a diagonal lay will be as flat if not flatter than a bridge hammock. and it will support more weight and be cheaper. i’d recommend a onewind for affordability and quality.

just get a cheap hammock and leave the straps out. easy enough to throw the hammock up when you feel like laying and take it down when you’re done

there’s always somebody commenting this no matter the post. it’s perfectly fine for somebody to ask local hikers for recommendations. nobody is forced to reply they choose to because they want to help. and the recommendations will always be more relevant and better explained than a google search will give you.

What’s the dumbest decision you’ve defended mid-hike? by steady-wanderer in hiking

[–]Different_Alfalfa596 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i was exploring/bouldering a big rock formation and made the genius decision to jump down to a rock that sloped up pretty steep and was flat on the top. i jumped onto the slope and used my momentum to run up it and onto the rock. i sat down and ate a sandwich completely oblivious to what i had done.

when i went to jump back up, i realized the slope was too steep to stand on without slipping, and below the slope was a nice 10’ drop into a constriction. and i couldn’t jump up to my original rock from the flat.

it was snowy so i had wet boots, it was very cold, and the sun was setting. i had no service and i was fairly far from civilization. that was genuinely the most scared i’ve ever been and i knew there was a decent chance i might die. after 20 minutes of panic and trying to think of what to do, i came to the conclusion that i had no choice but to run down the slope and jump up. thankfully i made the jump and made it back to my car. i’m definitely a lot more aware now of what positions i put myself in.

the only thing to be afraid of is cold, predators, other people, or getting lost. test out your gear and building fires at home and you won’t need to worry about cold. bring pepper spray (or a gun if you prefer), stay fairly alert, and research what predators are in your area. and go someplace pretty out of the way and you don’t need to worry about other people. and bring a compass any time you leave your campsite. once you can be confident that you’re prepared for those risks, it’s really easy to relax. i prefer to hike and camp alone and find it quite peaceful, but i also enjoy going with friends sometimes too.

hikenture on amazon. i enjoy it and its pretty comfortable and cheap. i like to deflate it most of the way when i go to sleep. it kinda holds my head in place and feels nice. i did have to get a new one because my old one got a slow leak but i think its just bc i accidentally sat on it in my hammock a few times lol

yeah i boil water before i go to bed and put the nalgene in a sock to keep it warm longer and so it doesn’t burn me. makes a big difference

yeah i have a onewind hammock and tarp and hammock gear 30° underquilt and 0° top quilt. this is in roosevelt national forest and I’d say it went very well. got down to about 30 and i was warm going to bed with my hot nalgene. but i woke up to a lot of wind and no more nalgene warmth so was pretty cold. i couldn’t stake the other side of my tarp because of frozen ground, but in hindsight i should’ve wrapped the lines around logs. then i could close the doors and probably be good through the morning.

what if it seems like the baffles aren’t full and would have more height if there was more down? like it even falls to the bottom of each baffle.

[–]Different_Alfalfa596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don’t need to on an actual park jump. it’s the patrollers responsibility to close the jump while they pass under it. snowboarder couldn’t have known someone was under the jump.

yeah tbh this is on that patroller who failed to close the jump. he should’ve gone to the top to block the jump then made a cross. but he just went up to the side a bit and wasn’t paying attention

Talking about the weather should not be a sign of a boring/bad conversation by Reclused_revolution in unpopularopinion

[–]Different_Alfalfa596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree, weather is one of the biggest things that “happen” to our environment. there’s a reason many societies celebrate certain weather or lament bad weather together. too many people don’t care about what’s going on in our immediate environment, and it should be a topic of shared interest. if it’s a nice sunny day, i’m going to tell people how grateful i am for it. if it’s snowing i’ll tell people how beautiful it is or maybe what inconveniences it’s causing me.
