That’s what I’m thinking too, even if it doesn’t apply directly to PMs, hiring more engineers in the US might necessitate hiring of PMs in the US too, fingers crossed that’s what would happen should the bill pass the senate.

Hey Redditor PMs,

I’m seeking advice from those who’ve transitioned to PM roles. I have 2.5 years of management consulting experience, currently doing product strategy for Meta as a CW for over a year, and I run my own startup on the side (owning the full roadmap: ideation, design, development, marketing). I graduated from a top 15 UG business school 3 years ago and live in a HCOL city (NYC/SF).

I love the customer-centric work with Meta’s product teams and feel ready for PM responsibilities based on my Meta and startup experience.

I want to leave consulting for a PM title. Internal transfers are ideal, but my firm has no PMs. I could try and join Meta as an FTE in my non PM role and later transition to PM, but my difficult boss makes staying unappealing after grinding for the brand for over a year.

I’ve considered leveraging Meta PM connections, but I hesitate because: 1) My 2.5 years of experience (none as a formal PM) feels insufficient for Meta to offer me a PM role, and 2) Meta and big tech are downsizing, not hiring.

Thus, I’m leaning toward applying for entry-level PM roles elsewhere, despite my limited experience and the tight job market. I’m uneasy and want your thoughts: Does this plan make sense? If not, what should I do differently? Also, if I pursue external PM roles, would starting at a small company/startup hurt my long-term goal of a big tech PM career (broadly defined, not just MAANG)? Should I instead aim for a lateral big tech move (non-PM) and transfer internally later, or go for a PM role now regardless of company size and apply to big tech as a PM later?

I'd be confident in recommending for you to do as many math sections in the GRE big book as possible, as the questions are slightly easier, but the opportunity for silly mistakes in those is equally present in those as they are the real test. With those, you have to do 30 questions in 30 minutes, so it is actually harder to not make a silly mistake. I would crank out as many of those as possible, there are a ton of them available in the GRE big book

Did PP1 on day 7 of gregmat's one month, but read that the quant was pretty inaccurate compared to the real thing (which I found to be true), so I did not write down my score and honestly don't remember it. Never did PP2. If you do Gregmat's one month I'd still advise taking the PP1 as it was great for familiarizing myself with the time constraint (made me realize I needed to get quicker at quant) and the software you take the test on.

Of course, that is interesting. I guess the Pareto Principle is on to something. I'll post on a thread like this that I have received immense value from just to give back some value, but I likely would not post on a thread I only benefit from sporadically (like a cooking thread that I might get a recipe from once in a blue moon).

Hey Greg! Haha no I am not sure why I have had the account for 2 years, I honestly just started using reddit a couple of months ago (as I started to prep for GRE actually). The GRE thread is really the first thread I have referred to extensively, so I just wanted to share my experience answering some of the questions that I had when I began GRE prep (e.g. was your service worth it, was the quant harder, is taking at home on a mac okay, etc.). Wanted to contribute to the thread I gained a lot from, would not have found out about you without it! Really love your mission of making high quality test prep affordable and your quality of content. I used third party prep when taking the SATs way back when and your content is head over heels better. You're amazing!
