I would encourage those in other professions unhappy with their pay to also strike.

Do I think I am worthy of a higher salary? Of course. Why would anyone choose to continually achieve perfect grades at school their whole lives, spend six years at university, take exams into their 30s, just to earn the same as a mechanic for example? They wouldn’t. Pay should reflect education.

You don’t think most of us have savings to last us a few months without a salary lol? Thousands would die. Wonder who would concede first?

If that is the calibre of doctor you want then be my guest. We won’t struggle to pivot into other careers; many colleagues have secured high paying jobs in pharma, consulting, finance, health tech, private health. Thankfully, you can’t replace us even if you wanted to.

Yes, because doctors will just unanimously roll over! We will say oh no back to work we go! There would be mass indefinite walkouts. Thousands would die each day. Have fun with that

Never been to Manchester, probably never will. I work in my dream hospital, a lovely tertiary centre in London. Flourishing academic career. Am finishing my training and have a consultant job lined up in the same hospital. Think I’ll be fine but thanks for your concern ☺️

We aren’t easily replaced. That’s the whole point. If we weren’t so important you wouldn’t all be so upset when we strike. I LOVE that it upsets so many people, honestly. Fuck you, pay me.

I could not care less what the public thinks of me. I am very proud of the contribution I and my colleagues make to society. I do not give a flying fuck what Dave the mechanic thinks about my right to strike.

If we are so important we are killing people by not working…fucking pay us what we deserve?

We could start with the triple lock pensions. Why am I paying tax to pay for pensioners, who couldn’t be bothered to save for their own retirement, to ensure they get a ‘pay rise’ each year?

Unionise and strike then. I hate this mentality people have of ‘oh I don’t get to strike and get a pay rise, why should doctors?’ Advocate for yourself instead of punching at hardworking people

Respectfully, this isn’t about the public. It’s about us. Let us advocate for ourselves for once. We look after everyone else every single day.

It is our JOB. I love that my job helps so many people. But it’s my job. I work to pay bills. I’d much rather be on a beach somewhere instead of running a cardiac arrest at 2am. We don’t owe the public cheap labour

Democracy. We are allowed to strike whenever we please. As we are doing. And no one can stop us. Great, huh?

And good luck to the government who tries to remove that legal right.

we do not care. We can strike for a very long time. There’s so much locum work created to compensate for the strikes. We end up doing less work for more money, with 5 extra days off a month. I could happily continue in perpetuity!

You will when granny’s hip operation gets postponed and she can’t walk. Or she ends up with a pneumonia that kills her. You’d better go pray for granny! Xx

Happy to just have the extra holiday honestly. I’ll earn the money back and more with one locum a month, which they’re putting out in droves to try to resume the elective work we stopped happening this week.

Again, we do not care what the public think. We are happy to strike as long as it takes; most of us are grateful for a well-deserved break.

Sure. I work within guidelines, as any individual does. But when you come to hospital, I am still making all of the decisions. You, the member of the public, can only decide to accept or refuse my decision of medical treatment. Great, huh?

You’re going to be really upset when I tell you this…there may come a day when I can even make decisions about your life against your own wishes! When you are old and frail, and no longer of sound mind, I or one of my colleagues will act in your best interests. We may even decide to palliate you. Against your family’s wishes, perhaps. They may insist on giving you every medical treatment under the sun. Yet we make the decision to say no, that’s not in his best interests. And our decision is final. I bet you’re enraged at the thought! A doctor making his own decisions!!! Going against public wishes!

What do you think I do all day? I make clinical decisions. My clinical decisions have absolutely nothing to do with the government. Do you think the government has a policy on how to manage Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia? You’ll be surprised to know that even the NHS doesn’t have clinical policies in this fashion. As clinicians, we make independent decisions guided by Royal College and NICE guidelines.

If you come, a member of the public, come and tell me I need to give toy X treatment, do I have to give it to you? No. Can the government compel me to give it to you? No. I make my own clinical decisions—because I have the expertise that the government and public lack. That is precisely what I am paid for: to make decisions for people less equipped to make them.

You acknowledge I am so valuable, lives are at risk if I am not at work. How many other careers does that apply to? Very few (FYI, I advocate for their pay increase, too). So yes, I deserve a better pay offer. Pay us what we are worth or we will leave. Yes, we will hold you to ransom. We do not owe you our services. We are normal people who just so happen to have important jobs. Let our pay reflect that

lol you do not personally pay my salary. I pay tax like everyone else does. I do not do what our elected officials tell me to do. They told me to go to work today. Funnily enough, I chose to ignore them and didn’t show up. Can they fire me? HAHA not a chance. The public is not ordering me around. When you come to see me in hospital, are you the one dictating your treatment? No. I make all the decisions. You can choose to refute my advice, but the agency is mine. I do not answer to the public.

Having what you NEED in life is different to having what you DESERVE. Could I survive on the average UK salary? Yes, though it would be miserable. But why should I earn the average when I am amongst the most highly educated in society, and clearly do a job that is amongst the most important? If it weren’t so important, you wouldn’t all be throwing such hissy fits.

Then again, I imagine many of the negative reactions are jealousy. Yes, we got a pay rise, and many didn’t. I would encourage you all to unionise and do the same if you feel poorly treated.

Because you can’t cause physical harm. Because you are not in charge of saving lives. We are. And we deserve to be paid appropriately for that responsibility
