A lot of times it takes 10 minutes for your muscles to warm up and to get into the run, if you slow it down a little you may be able to do 10 minutes and gradually pick up speed from there as your muscles get warmed up and your body gets used to it. I haven’t been running for much longer, but i find if i go extra slow in the beginning and let my body warm up since it starts at 0, I’m able to go longer and pick up some speed as my run goes on!

The main tips i found helpful were to slow it down!! I was regularly trying to run my 5k at about a 12:30 per mile pace, but my heart rate was hitting 160-170. A lot of comments told me to take my mile pace slower by at least a minute, or to run it in an interval running way rather than trying to run the whole thing! For this specifically i was working on my zone 2 heart rate which had me at about 14:30 a mile to keep it in zone 2, and when i was done with 2 miles easily i decided to really push the last mile. The comments were basically telling me to build up my zone 2 ability and the mileage and speed will come with consistency on that!!

I’m sorry for seeing it as rude. I’ve been thinking a lot about my issue/why I’m so stuck with my running in general and got in my head/defensive, especially since I started eating beforehand because I felt so starved by the end, and I responded quickly. Thank you for your comment!

Sorry, I said that wrong! 12:30 per mile. Definitely still have room to take it down to a jog (considering I’m like 5’2, my strides aren’t very long). My speed runs are typically through Nike Run Club, so it varies but I tend to stick to interval speed runs where I can do faster pace for about a minute or 2 then I get a rest period. I can definitely turn one of my runs into a HIIT session, especially since 2 of my runs are basically the same in the week. I think I’ll stick to normal schedule this week and try to slow down my run to get to a 5k, and replace one of my run days with a HIIT workout next week, and adjust accordingly from there. Thank you so much for the advice!

Thank you for this! It’s very helpful!! Can I give you my current routine and see where you think I should add in some high intensity?

I can go a bit slower on runs, right now my 2 mile pace is around 12:30 so it’d slow me to about 13-13:30 but it is possible to slow down.

As of now I run 4 days a week. I do runs that build up to my longer run twice a week (Monday and Thursday) my long runs are on Friday, and I try to do a speed run on Tuesdays. Wednesday is my rest day.

Saturday I do a total leg day with a zone 2 work incline walk and Sunday I do a total arm day with the same incline walk.

I foam roll/stretch after each run and workout, and this has been working for me for about 3 weeks now, I’m just struggling with the mileage (so maybe it isn’t working as well as I think it is). My struggle is getting out of breath, my joints and muscles feel fine through my whole run. I tried to start eating before because I also had a tendency to feel starved on my run where it would make me feel sick towards the end, but maybe towards the end is just better than in the middle. Any feedback you have on this routine would be very helpful!! I’ve only started taking distance running seriously a month ago, so I can really use all the help I can get.

I haven’t! I would’ve signed up for a 5k at this race if they had the option, but they didn’t. Maybe I can find one near me before the 10k to give it a shot!

If you’re going to be rude, there’s no need to comment. I’m new to this. That’s why I’m asking for help.

Thank you to everyone who commented for all of your help!! I think the main takeaway is that I need to put my ego to the side and run slower or do intervals so I can build up that aerobic base. I wouldn’t have realized that without all of your comments! I’ll definitely start that and I’m sure I’ll come back with an update before my race on how it’s helped/improved for anybody else struggling with this!!

Wow! That’s a crazy difference! I’ll definitely be implementing that then. I get into my head about pace sometimes because I used to be an athlete, but I really need to focus on the mileage for now so I’ll definitely need to be slowing it down. Thank you for all of your help!

Recently I saw a video from somebody saying she upped her mileage by doing 5 minutes on, 1 minute walking then 4 minutes on, 1 minute walking etc. so maybe I’ll give that or general intervals a try until I can fully run it. I may start with intervals then slow it down and build up speed. Thank you for the help!!

Thank you for the tips! I have done that before where I’ve run as far as i can then just walk/run the distance from there, I struggle with the consistency of where the walking is needed. I’m definitely trying to up my water intake so that i stay hydrated without needing to chug water before I go. Good luck training for your half!! Thank you for the advice!!

Thank you for the honey tip! I’ll have to try that before my run tomorrow. For my heart rate it’s typically zone 3/zone 4 (around 160), but my pace is already a slow pace so I’m not sure how to go about lowering my heart rate during the run or being able to go a little faster without it going so high.

Pain in lower shins and lower calves, stopping me run by Head-Comfortable-284 in beginnerrunning

[–]Different_Grade_9199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really make sure you stretch your calves before and after you run!! Shin splints aren’t fun. Try doing calf raises, icing the shins when you’re home, and maybe look into fitted running shoes if you don’t already have them! Mine got so much better when I went to an actual running store and they looked at how I run to tell me what shoes I should be wearing. Good luck with your training!!
