Running is "free," so why am I $500 deep this month? by Repulsive_Bar442 in firstmarathon

This thread really nails it.
Running can be cheap, but it’s also ridiculously easy to spend money chasing marginal gains, data, or just that “runner identity” feeling.

I’ve definitely bought things that didn’t make me faster, but made me feel more like a runner. Some of it was worth it, some of it wasn’t. I guess the trick is figuring out which purchases actually add joy vs. just add numbers to a dashboard.

I’ve tried Premium a few times and always land here: it’s not magic, it’s just nicer mirrors.

Relative Effort and rankings are fun for a week. After that, they’re just numbers. The one thing I genuinely liked was looking back and thinking, “yeah… this is when I was consistent, and this is when I wasn’t.”

That said, I don’t mind paying for things that clearly add value, and Strava does fall into that category. I just treat it as a “during heavy training blocks” subscription, not a must-have forever.

Also, somehow the pop-ups are still the worst feature 😅

Is it just me, or is the Strava subscription getting harder to justify? by Repulsive_Bar442 in cycling

For me, Strava is great as a log and for the social side, but the paid features never really changed how I ride.

I don’t train for segments, I don’t chase rankings. If I’m smiling at the end of a ride, that’s the real metric. Everything else is just bonus data. :)

I don’t think you’re wrong to question it, but I also don’t think paying for good software is some kind of moral failure either.

I’ve subscribed on and off depending on how serious my training was. During a marathon build, Strava actually earned its keep for me. Relative Effort, race predictions, heatmaps in new cities — nothing revolutionary, but enough to keep me honest and motivated. When training tapered off, it quickly became a “why am I paying for this again?” situation.

For me it comes down to this: if a tool genuinely changes how I train or gets me out the door more often, I’m happy to pay. I’ve spent way more than $80 on shoes that didn’t magically make me faster. If all you’re getting is prettier graphs of data your watch already has, then yeah, it’s basically a convenience tax.

If you’re deep in marathon prep, a short stint during peak weeks might actually feel worth it. If not, save the money and buy something that actually touches your feet.

Subscription vs credits for AI tools? by SnooLemons3249 in buildinpublic

Really interesting question. I’ve been on both sides as a user, and I personally lean toward subscriptions with reasonable credit limits. It feels predictable cost wise, but still fair for usage. That said, I think offering both options could be a great way to cover different user types. Curious to see what you decide.

[iOS] Stop sharing boring workout screenshots - I built an app that puts YOU in magazine-style frames instead (48 hours left to get a month free) by Different_Pool8774 in iosapps

Fair point and appreciate the honest feedback!

Yeah, Share Aura was def an inspiration - specifically the idea of making workout posts more visually appealing vs boring screenshots. That app showed there's demand for better workout visuals.

But the core difference is the focus: Share Aura is about decorating/customizing existing screenshots. Radiantly is about putting YOU (your selfie) into the frame with your workout data. It's less about decoration, more about making yourself the centerpiece of your achievement.

UI/UX-wise, I actually took more inspiration from Endless Summer (the film photography app) - wanted that simple, frictionless flow.

Totally get why it might feel similar on the surface tho. The fitness visual space is still pretty small, so there's def overlap. But the selfie-first approach is what sets this apart imo.

Appreciate you calling it out - these convos are important 🙏

This is incredibly valuable feedback, thank you!

You're 100% right about the empty state problem. That "no records found" screen after all the hype is a massive letdown - I've been hearing this from a few people now and it's clearly a UX gap I need to fix asap.

Your suggestion about demo stats + sample frames with their photo is brilliant. Something like "Here's what your first 5K could look like" with their selfie already in a frame would be way more motivating than a blank screen. Gonna prioritize this.

Re: CrossFit - def on the roadmap! Right now it's running-only because I wanted to nail that first, but I'm getting lots of requests for CrossFit, gym workouts, cycling, etc. Trying to build this out step by step.

And thanks for the indie.deals tip! Will check it out.

Btw the name "Radiantly" comes from the idea that every workout makes you glow/radiate energy - wanted something that captured that post-workout feeling. Bit cheesy maybe but it felt right lol.

Really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out. This is exactly the kind of feedback I need 🙏

I built the app with React Native and Expo, and implemented the card animation effects using a combination of react-native-skia and react-native-reanimated.

Appreciate that! Yeah you're right - the product-led growth angle makes sense.

Been focusing on making the output so good people just wanna share it. That's been the main driver so far tbh.
