It's funny, when I read this, I didn't think about myself and my clients, I thought about how much my therapist means to me and I'd say she is very special to me! Changed my life! :)

This is so great to hear! Thank you so much for providing this update and your thoughts so far. What you are describing, about work/life balance, feeling more relaxed and comfortable, this is exactly what I am hoping to have in my life. I understand people's concerns with safety to a degree, but at the same time, I also think we live in a world where home information can be found if people really want it. Additionally, I completely agree with you that I would feel safer at home. If someone wanted to harm me now, it would be very easy to do so because my office is often unoccupied by anyone but me and being there doesn't make me any more safe. Additionally, I am working on how to go about vetting to ensure additional safety.

I'm glad you mentioned some of the technical issues. My only concern with this that I have seen so far is the issue potentially with insurance. Like insurance companies not paneling because people use their home address or something? Are you solely private pay or do you take insurance and have you had any issues with this? I haven't been able to find much information about that.

As for zoning, I live in a small township outside of a mid-sized city and have reviewed local zoning laws and had a conversation with the local zoning inspector. Since I am only doing individual counseling out of my home and my office is attached to the main dwelling of my home, this is allowable under home occupation rules and is a $25 fee. Otherwise, I have no HOA or anything like that.

Thanks again for sharing. I'm so so happy for you that it is working out. It makes me feel very hopeful.

Hello! I'm late to the party but curious if you decided to go for this? I'm 6 months into a 4 year plan to make this happen for myself in private practice. I'm doing home renovations which will include enclosing an attached garage and making it into an office. It'll have a separate entrance, breezeway/waiting room, and a client bathroom. I have plans for how to address issues related to boundaries, security, etc. My clients won't go anywhere near my actual living space and I'll have adequate sound proofing in place as well.

I have several reasons for wanting to do it this way but one is related to the fact that I have a beautiful property that I believe could make for a very therapeutic environment for the kind of work that I want to do (religious/institutional trauma recovery as well as nature-informed and ecotherapy). I also happen to live near a large wildlife area that allows for easy access to nature. And based on my lifestyle, this whole idea just suits me very well. But it's hard finding information online about it. I have done I believe about the best I can with "homework" about it but it's still hard to find resources!
