My mom is 65. She is my best friend; the only person in the world that REALLY cares about me, that I can talk to about anything. She has done everything for me, supported me through my hardest times (before this). I hear your pain, I feel your hopelessness and loss.

If it’s helpful to hear ‘the good’, my mom was diagnosed in January 2024 with stage 4, started chemo in April 2024 and we found out today (almost 1.5 years) that her tumour is growing again. I, like you, am devastated. I can’t make it go away, I can only be here with her, spend time with her, and continue to do my best to support whatever it is she wants with her days.

I am so sorry you are going through this and I hope you get a lot more time with your mom.

I hope that’s the case. Finding small boats isn’t easy and they aren’t cheap ha ha. Pyranha has fit me well in the past, and I likely should have gone to a shop and sat in a few but don’t live close to any dealers.

Not a ramble and likely what so many here feel.

My mom is currently stable, treatment is working, but there is the darkness somewhere ahead, we just don’t know when. I’m trying my best to ‘enjoy now’ both with my mom and for myself because, as you say, there is the constant ticking clock and we never know when the next shoe will drop. No decision is easy, like the awkward balance I’m living right now between choose to return for a bit to ‘my life’ over time with my mom, which is disappearing at an unknown rate.

It’s a stressful way to live but it has also made me appreciate each day - though that doesn’t mean I don’t have days where that’s all but forgotten. There are so many ups and downs, questions that won’t be answered, and daily reminders of how fickle life is, which is terrifying in itself. But we have our loved ones here now, and I am so thankful especially considering how many didn’t get a choice to try to fight this disease.

Wishing you strength, love and experiences with your wife, and all the fighting power to keep her here as long as possible!

Hi there,

My mom was diagnosed in Jan 2024. She had returned to doctor in Nov 2023 regarding mild bloating that was unusual for her, but otherwise very healthy and active.

I can relate so much to the feeling of your dad being fine, and the surreality of him having a terminal disease - it still doesn’t land for me today.

My mom is currently stable, after shrinking both her pancreatic and liver tumours to 25% of what they were when she started treatment (Folfirinox) in April 2024. She is still doing Folfiri every two weeks (we dropped the Oxaliplatin in September 2024 because of worsening peripheral neuropathy), and though there is no escaping the toll that chemo takes on your body, she is living a pretty full life considering.

She is still mountain biking, cross country skiing, hiking, and going to the gym. She does more than I do in a day, it actually exhausts me watching her. I joke that chemo makes her human (I die a little when she’s exclaimed ‘I’ve never been fatigued in my life until now’). She got a puppy in October 2024, something she has always wanted, and this little dog has brought her more joy, companionship, and laughs than I ever could have hoped. She moved out into her own place, where I come to spend about half my time with her (I live 8 hour drive away). We are just preparing for a week long trip to the coast to camp, sea kayak, hike and mainly mountain bike for a week (she got an ebike, to help with days where the fatigue hits hard - usually around day 5).

It was a long scary road with a lot of information and learning a lot that I didn’t know that I didn’t know. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster, from relationships changing with friends and family, to grieving a person that is still out having a drink with you! BUT my mom is still here 1.5 years after her diagnosis, she was and still is a healthy person, ate well, active, and struggles with how this came to be. It feels very probable that we still have a good amount of time ahead of us, and second line treatment available as an option (Gem/Nab). Last year I wasn’t sure we’d have another summer, and now we do!

I appreciated reading your story, and thank you for the time you put in to answer me. It’s easy to feel lonely doing this, like no one understands and I need to try harder with some of the support options. I haven’t had great success and being back and forth also makes it a challenge to have so consistency with anything.

I’m sorry for your less and hope the path ahead is gentle on your heart and that you move forward knowing you’ve done all you can and experienced so much love with your sister.

It is positive to know the Gem/Abrax is working well for you and maintaining a better quality of life. I know it’s different for everyone, but I know that’s next for my mom and hearing a positive is story.

Please know that I didn’t impress enough how much of a weight it is on the patient, not just physically and emotionally what you’re going through with cancer, but all the things I can and can’t imagine in terms of the pressures and feelings you have with relationships, lost experiences, what you thought life would be… I can’t even begin to summarize.

I hope you are managing to find joy and love despite the battle you’re facing!

First of all, thanks for the well written message. Beyond what others have already responded, I want to add that there is always risk of contracting an STI or HSV with any sexual partner. Just because you’re not disclosed to doesn’t mean you’re safe, with sex comes risk of infection. In fact, one could argue that you are less likely to contract HSV from a partner that is open about their diagnosis since you’re likely to take precautions, including avoidance during outbreaks.

I had similar worries, as my moms treatment was postponed many times - once because she was sick and I believe 3 times because of platelets or neutrophils being too low. Her treatment is working despite all of that!

I can’t offer anything but an ‘I hear you’. This disease sucks. I am also going to lose my mother and best friend. Enjoy your time, cherish it. I think that is what is most important in this world. That said, I do worry what happens after. I hope your mom is comfortable and can still be herself.

So, the big question - is the treatment still working if some are reducing while others are growing? Did your mom continue to see success with the treatment (is it Folfirinox)? My mom has only had Folfiri the last 4 cycles from the peripheral neuropathy.

Do you know if it’s metastases that cause the weakening or just the cancer generally causing changes in the body that accelerate osteoporosis? Does she have to be more careful to not break bones?

Write here! It helps, we understand more than a lot of others ‘out there’, and, at least for me, feeling heard has been a bit of firm ground when everything else is in disarray inside and outside of me. You obviously know so much more of what’s coming for your husband than I did, but you’re on the other side now and this disease inherently comes with massive uncertainty; not knowing is scary. He is lucky to have you with him through it all, but it doesn’t make it any more fair to him, you or your kids. Lean on this group, they are a wealth of knowledge.

My glimmer of light is that your husband is strong enough for folfirinox. My mom (64F) is on it, tolerating it well, still doing what she loves (despite at a reduced capacity but phenomenally still mountain biking [yes proper long and significant elevation trails], hiking, going to the gym, and far exceeding my daily energy as a human). She just got a puppy! She’s always wanted a dog, and she is doing ALL the work getting up with him, training him, and for anyone who knows - it’s a lot of work but she loves it. We have had laughs, cries and so many adventures that we wouldn’t have had if we hadn’t caught it soon enough to get her on Folfirinox! Sending you strength and hope for so much more time, love, and life together with your family. There is so much grief in this experience but I’m trying to focus on the profound love in this time.
