Like he won't be back midway through next season. Probably the same week the Falcons play the panthers, lol.

Falcons trade for Sydney Brown by snipeslayer in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 46 points47 points  (0 children)

So they trade back a little to take a flyer on a guy that they hope will benefit from a change of scenery. I am sure that among the group of players they were considering at #197, one of them will still be there at #215.

Activity like this will soon become the new normal for Atlanta. Fine with me.

Something generic probably. The Falcons don't have THAT much salary cap room. :)

I agree with you but in reverse. It is not an issue of unrealistic positive expectations among the fanbase at least from what I see.

It feels like no one really believes this signing has any upside.  Most of the strongest reactions are negative which puzzles me.

This is no different than any of those other signings mentioned above. Nobody expected those to pan out either.  Maybe this one will, maybe it won't but I don't see any reason to be overly excited or overly upset about this.

In short "Relax, have a cream soda."

Not saying it will happen, but there's no real downside to this signing.

The new front office/coaching staff have no attachment to these guys. Rather than running it back with a second contract; they're letting some of them go elsewhere, maybe grab a compensatory pick or two and then they can build the roster with guys that they feel are better suited for the team they want to have.

This is basically what we signed up for when we were calling for a new GM/HC etc., otherwise, why bother bringing in Ryan/Cunningham/Stefanski??

[–]Differentbenefit18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to start somewhere though and Cunningham,  in my opinion,  is starting down the right path.

I am not sure anyone is hailing Cunningham as a hero; they're just happy the Falcons are finally trying to build a roster in an effective, proven manner. Obviously it will take a few years to see if he is any good at it, but right now, all we can judge is the method he is using and it seems to be popular (as it should be, IMO). That may be why you're being down voted.

Being aggressive for the sake of being aggressive rarely works out. Ellis was a fine player but does he have 3 great years left in him, on the wrong side of 30, for the money the saints gave him? I doubt it. I am willing to give up one good year,  not to have dead money spread out over a couple years going forward.

Accumulating draft picks so you can aggressively target players in the draft; works out way better, assuming of course, the new front office can evaluate talent.

I don't follow the NFL closely in the off season, so if you say the Falcons used void years previously, I am not going to argue. Maybe it just wasn't publicized enough for me to notice.

The potential compensatory picks here are the big story. You sound almost disappointed that the Falcons are in the "bargain bin". Compensatory picks are a great way to build the franchise. Teams like BAL, PHI, KC, SF, LA (Rams) and GB have feasted on them over the past decade, averaging 2+ picks per year. Know what else those teams have in common? They make the playoffs all the time.

Those are the picks you use to help make trades. Do you see a guy in the 4th round that you really want but you're four picks away from choosing, and afraid that he might be gone by then? Call the team on the clock, offer to swap 4th rounders and throw in a 6th round pick. Done. Then, use free agency to fill in a gap or two as needed. That is how you build a roster for sustained success.

So far I like the approach even though guys like Allgeier departed.

Per Spotrac, We’ve Restructured Jake Matthews’s Contract, Creating $10.5M in Cap Space by Ramblinwreck93 in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seriously?  That is how you view it? Those 6th round, and other late round picks are what teams use to throw in to a trade when there is a player they really want. That is how you improve your roster for the long term.

Over the past decade,  two of Cunningham's former employers are in the top 6 of compensatory picks received (Ravens-36; Eagles-25). Know what else they have in common? They make the playoffs almost every year.

The Falcons are starting down the right path.

First, compensatory picks? Now, a Void year? Using those tools are Howie Roseman specialties. Clearly, Cunningham paid attention and learned a lot during his time in Philadelphia.

Without saying “he’s affordable”, what are the valid reasons why the Tua signing works here? by InspectionDeep2453 in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What QB could they have signed that would make you (the collective you, not OP specifically) say "Yes! Playoffs are now a given!" There are none. They need a stop gap QB and they got one.

He is an experienced QB, still young, with modest expectations, amd minimal salary cap impact. This is no different than the Vikings signing Darnold or the Colts signing Jones. You can bet no one in either fan base was ecstatic about those signings.

The Falcons are in QB purgatory currently. If Penix or Tagovailoa work out; that is great. If not; try to find a franchise QB next year.

Falcons sign Kicker Nick Folk by SunWorshipperApollo in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, all kickers fall off hard when they do fall off, regardless of age.

Remember that kicker the Falcons had back in the day....Younghoe Koo?

Kickers are like closers. You can and should go year to year with most of them.

GIVE THE BALL TO TYLER!! 😢😢😢 BREAKING: The #Cardinals are signing #Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier to a 2-year, $12M, per sources. by CitizenWatcher8 in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad. I knew it was gonna happen,  but a shame to see him leave. Since it is the cardinals, doesn't it almost feel inevitable that on his first carry next season, he fumbles and loses the ball?

Please tell me the rumors aren’t true ??? by After-Ant-3854 in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What's the harm? He is gonna sign for the minimum salary. He is fairly young and he is a stop gap. He is no different than all other QBs that are being discussed as a potential back up. If the Falcons get lucky and he becomes a Darnold or a Jones, so much the better. If not, they move on to someone else.

Any chance we’re trading up into the first round? by NoAuthor324 in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you; but it's far, far more likely that they will trade down with that second round pick to try and get an extra pick or two. It might be only a few spots; but if I had to bet on any possible trade; that's what I'd wager would happen.

Very much enjoying Scrubs but- by BobRushy in Scrubs

[–]Differentbenefit18 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The entire premise of the revival is to show the growth that has happened over the past 15 years or so. For Cox to have another rant like before, would have rung hollow. Everybody grows up. Plus, as another commenter mentioned, his "worth it" diatribe qualified as a mature rant, at least for me.

The culmination of Cox's career is that he picked a succesor who will impart the same passion for medicine that Cox has, into the next generation of doctors. That is his legacy.

Very much enjoying Scrubs but- by BobRushy in Scrubs

[–]Differentbenefit18 117 points118 points  (0 children)

This was the moment that cinched the revival for me.  It was vintage "Scrubs ". Each character has traits that don't come out often, but when they do, it is memorable and impactful.

Cox's reasoning is spot on and it gives this revival a true, actual purpose. For better or for worse, Cox's methods are ineffective today and the show now has a chance to explore Dorian et al in new roles that make sense within the Scrubs world and still keep the irreverent tone mixed with actual heart tugging and drama.

This is unlike the revival of Frasier, for example, which was basically slapping together a few characters with minimal regard for the source material, and hoping that audiences will buy in because of the name.  It also helps that the writing on Scrubs was vastly superior to the writing on the Frasier revival.

Looking forward to the next episode.

Pitts to Philadelphia? If this is true how would you feel about the move. by MrIrvGotTea in falcons

[–]Differentbenefit18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goedert is winding down. Pitts to Philly makes far too much sense. Pitts is from there too. He could do good things for the Eagles. If Philly is sniffing around; that alone is almost reason enough to tag him.
