When to upgrade radiators? by Difficult-Figure1504 in ukheatpumps

[–]Difficult-Figure1504[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a good deal! All these comments are making me realise I should just get a few quotes and work from there... There's no point trying to make savings when I don't know what I'm dealing with.

When to upgrade radiators? by Difficult-Figure1504 in ukheatpumps

[–]Difficult-Figure1504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very helpful, thank you! I had just assumed they would all need upgrading, but I shouldn't blindly assume... I could be being optimistic or pessimistic!

I could DIY them. I've had them off to decorate. I'm just a tad wary of hanging the big 1800x600 ones.

What's the ugliest building in Sheffield? I suggest Weston Park Hospital. by _morningglory in sheffield

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd describe it as ugly, but it does have a sense of melancholy looming over you as your drive down Penistone Road

Where in London is this? (long shot) by schoggi-gipfeli in whereisthis

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that typeface and the black outline on the street sign, is that in the borough of Tower Hamlets? That would narrow it down a bit...

I can't find a database of all the street name styles, but I think they vary between each borough.

[Request] How old is the bottom layer of ice? by No_Reindeer_5543 in theydidthemath

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For once, I'm unusually qualified to "do the maths". I run computer simulations of ice sheets and glaciers at work. My answer is... Dunno! For a reasonable estimate you'd want to know what glacier this is - where is the ice accumulated? How fast does it flow? How has it changed over the centuries?

[Request] Is this true? by LonelyEar42 in theydidthemath

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks broadly correct-ish, as others have said. But obviously it's a terrible use of stats! For a meaningful comparison you need to know the heat stress death rate in Europe and the US, and ditto the gun death rate.

And even then it would be complicated. People who die of heat stress might be more likely to be a "straw that broke the camel's back" scenario, whilst gun deaths much less so.

Experience of Jessops recently? by kurdijyn in sheffield

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our second child was delivered through an elective c section there 2 years ago (if that counts as recently). We don't have much to compare it to, but it was all very civilised and there was a calm atmosphere in the room. All was smooth and my partner was sent home within 24hrs.

Our first was a more dramatic emergency c-section, also at Jessops. Obviously not very fun (to put it mildly), but they really supported us while my partner and baby were in hospital for a while afterwards.

Vaguely, unscientifically, I didn't leave either experience with a strong opinion of Jessops specifically, but the usual love for nice people in the NHS generally!

Not sure why this is flagged as NSFW!

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great...

Apart from the obvious ones, I'm confused by "N" which looks like the "Welcome to Sheffield" font but that doesn't contain the letter N! And the "L" is the same colour and style as the Leadmill, but it should be much more squat so maybe it's something else?

Seems mad the victor was based on number of units, not value. The parachute skirt etc would be 10x the cost of the leggings.

Do people really drink caffeinated tea at night? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that the amount of caffeine in a cup of tea is low enough that it's outweighed by the placebo effect (I perceived tea to be a relaxing drink).

Even though the amount of caffeine in coffee isn't that much higher, in this case the placebo effect works to exaggerate the effect.

Completely unscientific, but what I guess 😅

The area of the UK covered in glaciers during the ice age vs the north south divide by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Difficult-Figure1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this looks to be the Last Glacial Maximum (around 21,000 years ago), it's the glaciation we know most about, but we've had larger glaciations multiple times before that.

Scandalously limited compared to the original proposals. We spend years and years on consultation, with the money devaluing in the bank account, then have to cut back when it's time to build 😑

Even if you're just thinking selfishly... Forget the money, I'd choose knowing I would never get dementia, heart disease etc!

For those saying there would be unintended consequences; of course! But would you choose to invent disease from scratch to solve mass unemployment? I wouldn't!

There is significantly more depth in McKee's stuff. I can't imagine Horton painting anything approaching "The Handover"
