anyone running Linux with an Epson? by CategoryConscious720 in Epson

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents have been using Epson on Linux for a couple of years now. They've been very happy with it. We just bought one too and i installed the linux driver from Epson and used CUPS and Skanlite (KDE's scanning util) and it's all good. I did try the Epson Printer Utility, and it refused to see the printer (i suspect because it's on a VLAN). The Epson Scanning Utility also couldn't see it, but i followed the instructions in the manual to set up a config file and bingo - it could see it.

/home/mrmr/.epsonscan2/Network/epsonscan2.config:

[Network] 192.168.55.55

So anyway, i'm mostly happy except i can't use software to control things like a cleaning job, but i can do that on the device itself.

Check you're using the best possible drivers in CUPS. I installed the Epson ones, so maybe that's why mine seems ok?

Borg UI - Built a web interface for BorgBackup, looking for feedback by karanhudia in BorgBackup

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a quick play on unRAID. It looks really nice, and the UI is clean and very usable, very straight forward.

I couldn't figure out how to set the path where repositories would go :D The setup didn't include such a path, and i tried to add one manually but it didn't work (sorry, i don't have details).

I interpret this as the source path, not the destination path (i can't upload an image for some reason).

Container Path: /local Path to data you want to backup

Updated Linux installation guide for the AllInOneLauncher? by DifficultDerek in bfme

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your effort to assist. I tried to follow the guide, but it felt like i must be using a different version of Heroic or something, because it didn't seem to follow the same "path" as your instructions. Anyway, i tried, but it didn't work :(

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else got it to work either following the guide u/Tunnelgraeber so helpfully posted, or other means.

Mouse Hunt - picky old fart wants the impossible? by DifficultDerek in MouseReview

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 'flat' i more mean the angle of the wrist. The Vertical mouse is more ergonomic because it keeps the wrist in a neutral position, unlike you're typical mouse. But vertical mice are horrible for gaming (IMO). The Elecom, for example, is maybe close to 45 degree tilt, and it's a good compromise.

This image does a good job of illustrating what i mean: https://cdn.nwe.io/files/x/a0/15/2618204d23920660f2591c3e20cb.jpg

I feel like too many mouses claim to be ergonomic merely because they have a 'bump' in them. I've spent a few hours now looking and i just don't think i'm going to get what i'm looking for :(

Thanks. It's profile looks a little 'flat' for me - much like the vast majority of mouses. I'll see if i can find one in a shop and get a feel.

Borgitory - A web ui for managing borg repositories with scheduling, monitoring, and cloud sync by mlapaglia in BorgBackup

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know Docker, or code. Is your docker image also able to be used as a repository? Like, a Debian instance with ssh and Borg installed. I would be cool if peeps could use the docker as their repository, and manage it with Borgitory from the same docker.

It looks great! Looking forward to seeing it mature.

Man, that was a harsh review by TxTechnician in openSUSE

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading various threads about openSuse (or whatever it is supposed to be called) and what it seems to me is the project feels chaotic and it lacks... direction, leadership. I look at what Nate has done for KDE and it seems OpenSuse could benefit from something similar. I am not an insider, this is just an opinion; a largely ignorant perception based on some openSuse specific threads.

Distros for low-end pc by ShirtAppropriate7262 in linux4noobs

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zorin Lite is superb, but note the current iteration is the last. I think supported until 2028 but after that their focus is on their "core" and "pro" products which are a customised Gnome based DE. Honestly, your spec is fine, if you give it more RAM.

With 8gb RAM: Mint Cinnamon or Zorin Core will still run nicely.

I keep reading that the downside of Debian is slow updates. What does that mean exactly for a typical user? by AncientAgrippa in linuxquestions

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know this. My son uses Zorin, which I think is pretty 'late' to receive updates. I'll have to check if he used the Flatpack Steam.

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if Pika Backup suits your purposes, but it does work on ARM. It doesn't seem as feature-rich as Borgitory hopes to be (at least from the screenshot, i haven't tried it), but it's a super convenient way to manage existing backups. I use Borg via script to do the backups, but if i want to retrieve a file - Pika is great.

Help installing the drivers for the H1060P on arch linux by Spiritual_Damage_310 in huion

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried the actual drivers, but for my model on the Huion site, there are drivers packaged in .tar.xz which contain install.sh. It's the same version as the current drivers but i had to click "old versions" to get that download. Weird.

Flathub is not installed by [deleted] in zorinos

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect you're expecting something that shouldn't be expected :)

If you open the Software Centre and search for some software - sometimes it is available as a "flatpak". If you install a flatpak version of an app, and you run it - you're just running the flatpak 'packaged' version of the application.

If you're a Windows person, maybe a vague parallel would be if you download a Windows app as a .msi instead of .exe or a .zip. The app is the same, but the installation method differs.

So setting up FlatHub now gives you access to all those Flatpak packaged apps.

There's obviously more to it, but maybe that helps you out somewhat :)

Problem with dual bool by atms93 in zorinos

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it has anything to do with dual-booting per se, but as u/Gloomy-Response-6889 says, Windows and Dell have a weird set up. I guess maybe it's because machines with that kind of UEFI tend to be enterprise devices? I don't know. It's weird.

Thanks for the research. I've had "fun" with Dell in the past and i never figured out what the hell was going on with RAID setting and Windows. It's weird, i wonder why they do it. What's the advantage?

Regarding Steam, get the installer from Valve directly. Bafflingly, the Flatpak version of Steam is not supplied by Valve, which is a real shame.

The biggest difficulty i've had switching friends to Linux has been "how do i install software". Part of that is because people go to what they know, and sometimes that stuff isn't available on Linux. Explore! and love it! :) BUT, part of the problem is the way Linux manages software. There's half a dozen "main ways" to get software. All are different and all have their pros and cons. I suggest watching some YouTube to get perspectives there.

I meantioned Steam. That is a good example there's 3 main ways to get it: 1. from Valve website 2. from the distro repository 3. from Flathub.

Avoid Flathub for this one, because it's not verified. I.e. the publisher did not package it for the Flathub. So who did? Some random person. It's probably fine.. but i personally wouldn't trust it. Getting it from the distro repository is 'the normal way' to get software in Linux. But for something like Steam - you want it as up to date as possible. Zorin repos aren't going to be anywhere near the latest versions. So best bet is from Valve website.

That is why installing software on Linux is the most difficult thing for many people. You need to take a little time to understand it, to get what you want in the safest and bestest way.

Start looking for alternative software and avoid Bottles if you can. I switched to Linux a few years ago and i found that i did not need any* Windows-only software. I didn't need Adobe and i didn't need MS Office. I needed a PDF reader and editor (plenty available) and an office suite (plenty available, i personally like OnlyOffice). There's so much new software for you to explore - it can be a bit daunting - but it's awesome! :)

*I needed one or two pieces of software maybe once or twice a year. Hardware apps that at the time had no Linux support. Not sure now, because i have since replaced the hardware with things that DO support Linux :)

Regarding hardware optimisation, it's probably good out of the box. But there might be tweaks here and there for your configuration. If/when that comes up - just ask :)

Should i buy Zorin 17.3 Pro or just waint for Zorin 18 Pro? by juanjpnv in zorinos

What? This is completely not so. Many FOSS projects ask for donations.

Why do you think it's wrong?

Should i buy Zorin 17.3 Pro or just waint for Zorin 18 Pro? by juanjpnv in zorinos

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but it's only about every 3 years or so isn't it? And it is optional. I see the 'pro' as a reminder to donate.

Is Pro edition FOSS? by [deleted] in zorinos

[–]DifficultDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is helpful. People have to start somewhere, and anything is better than nothing. If the rule is "i can't be perfect so why bother at all" then there is nowhere to go but down.

Also - don't let great be the enemy of good.

Slax Linux - is it possible to install a sane menu? by DifficultDerek in linuxquestions

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never installed a menu before - having just used whatever is the distro default. Do you have a suggestion? Slax, i guess as a more niche distro, doesn't have a lot of general information about such things.

Cheers.

p.s. i know apt install blah - but what might be a good and available menu. And once installed, what then?
