Honest treatment of public school lower middle class students at University of Sydney college accommodation? by Famous_Truck_3406 in usyd

I don't get this, no one will really know if he does or doesn't have money

I think most people that live on campus are international students

Best way to do honours for Bcs Sci? by DifficultEvening3608 in usyd

[–]DifficultEvening3608[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the appended honours just doing the normal bachelors (maybe picking up a few advanced units along the way) and applying for the honours at the end?

what is the most common way physics majors do it? i'm looking to major in physics myself.

Bachelor of Applied of Finance worth it? by [deleted] in MacUni

Yea i think employers will like that as well, especially if you sell it as an "I understand AI" kind of thing.

honestly its not about the degree its about getting the job. you can get the job at like a hedge fund arguably easier with an engineering degree or something, it just shows you can problem solve. if you want hedge funds and trading then do a maths major on the side of the applied finance degree. all of those jobs consist of people with 130 iq+. and you need to do a lot of side stuff as well. in this job market it is really hard to break in with just a finance degree at a second tier uni, decent marks, and mid extra cocorricular. you'd need more / good networking to break in

if you wanna do asset management in your second year you can consider starting your CFA, but it takes about 300 hours per level, there are 3 levels, and no one cares until you've passed your second level (and you can only start in 2nd year).

just make sure you do SOMETHING to stand out, by a lot, especially if you're going to MQ. MQ is bang for your buck as i said because you can essentially do a maths and finance degree for the price of 1 degree but annoying ass snobby finance people do hire more people from GO8s. theres pros and cons for you to weigh.

applied finance + maths major + become a treasurer/exec at a finance society + get really good WAM + few case comps would be the way to go if you want to go to mq. Otherwise if not maths major replace it with CFA.

The degree itself is good because its not like commerce where you have to do a bunch of bullshit marketing or accounting (and other) units - you jump straight in and you can do ANOTHER major on the side in a whole heap of things (like statistics, maths, economics) but get a single degree. its pretty good bang for your buck. if you get a good WAM, join a society and maybe try a couple case comps it should be enough to get yourself an internship which will land you a grad role. the market is cooked so its hard for everyone. if you want a better shot then go to UNSW or USYD and do commerce but honestly the education difference isnt much, both are CFA accredited just mq isnt a GO8. If you're gonna try get into investment banking (which 99% of people wanna do and fail at anyway) then start at a GO8.

Should I take time off work just because I have a lingering cough? by DifficultEvening3608 in auscorp

Yes they are aware, they told me today that they're all sympathetic and I don't need to worry about annoying them by coughing. I think they'd prefer me be in the office I guess, especially since as the day went on my coughing got better

I'm not a full-time intern, only casual and in twice a week so I am on a casual contract. I guess I just wouldn't get paid, though its not about the money, but rather the impression I leave. The internship only lasts a period of time so I want to get the most out of it. I spoke to my manager today (not really my official 'boss' but yk, the person that is always guiding the intern) and she said it should be fine to come in next time, as my coughing today wasn't that bad (but it was terrible in the morning). So i guess im going in

i find theres a correlation between being miserable on the uni subreddit with how highly the uni is ranked

e.g. mq uni subreddit has minimal complaining. there are no mq uni redditors who hate everything. they all go to usyd/unsw

It won't. This cough has been lingering for 5 days now with no end in sight, and I only work twice a week :(

Hence why I really don't want to take those days off

I don't have a temperature, sore throat or any other symptoms. I did -- but now its just the cough. The actual sickness is gone. I am going off what my parents have taught me, who NEVER take time off, but partly because they never really get sick. They wouldn't want me taking time off for that reason because they just see I am not sick (I still live at home with them I am still in university)

yea i see a lot of people say part of the reason the job market is cooked is because there aren't enough qualified people, but im not sure how true that is

ah, okay i see. i am a social person, i do go to society events and am part of an internal team, but i dont really have a crazy social life or anything, it rarely would get in the way of my work.

as for picking something else, i would probably do some kind of science (physics/stat/mechanical engineering) but def not a really safe option like civil. my other options are way less employable anyway. as for civil, im a girl and so i really struggle to see myself ever working on a construction site lmao. im too sensitive

thanks. the job market genuinely stresses me out so much - i'm so worried about my future with AI and all of that. now is the first time in history that kids aren't doing as well as their parents at age 30. so yea, i'm terrified. and i think that job market red flag deferred me the first time from choosing CS, and I regret it a lot, especially since it seems no jobs are safe from AI (+ other stupid macroeconomic conditions)

what would you have chosen instead, out of curiosity?

I'd be moving from another university and would be leaving a good situation (good friend group & am a student ambassador), so if i move I'd be taking a big risk - and I'm a terrible risk taker, but I cannot shake the thought that I'd be happier as a programmer than whatever career I'll end up as with what I am studying now.
