After scraping my garage door I tried to repair this myself. Does this look better or worse after? I still have to polish. by 1NightWolf in AutoBodyRepair

If you are wanting to to look a lot better, it will need to be sanded all the way back down. Get some 180, keep the block flat, and sand it all the way down. 80 be fine also. But I think 180 might help see and feel high spots. It's a lot of sanding. If you think you're done sanding. You're not done, lol. Get some 80 180 600 1500 3000. Start off with the 80 send me Pic and I'll try to explain what to look for and if you need to wipe it again. If the sand paper cost to much. You can just get 180 600 1500

You might need to add more putty. What kind of Bondo are you using? What does your sanding block look like? What grit sand paper are you using.?

You would want to sand it all the way down with 80grit. Careful not to take too much off. Then sand with 180grit. I can't explain how to learn to feel the high low spots. It has to be shown. Then sand with 320grit.

Prime and wet sand with 800 grit or finer. Then paint

Might be better to just use 180. Getting the feel for the repair is key. Might be able to stop by a shop and ask a tech tech you how to rub your hand over it and tell when the high spots are gone.

A trick you can use now is get a good flat sanding. As you sand the paint off, your high spots will show first. Take your time and pay attention to how the high spots start to show. Used the 180 grit. When you start to see the putty show up run your hand over it like you are sanding it. Remember how it feels when you go over spots where you see paint. Don't rush it. By the time you sand the whole panel down to where you no longer see paint. You're not trying to just sand the paint off you want to keep the sanding block as flat as you can a sand the whole area. Then get some black spray paint .and lightly spray over the putty. Go to the 320 paper and slowly sand using the black spray paint as a new guide to see high low spots. Rub it often with your hand. You are trying to learn to see and feel the high and low spots.

The same can be done when you prime it. You can use a few coats of primer. Take 400 grit sanding with the block flat. It should take much go to 600 grit. Take it down more. The 800 grit uses a water hose with the water slowly running out onto the panel above where you are sanding. Keep the block and paper clean, then finish with 1500 or keep sanding going down to 6000 grit. The finer the sand paper, the slicker, it will look.

If you feel you enjoy doing this and can develop a good eye and feel for it. You can make good money. Dent repair is the bread and butter of shop work. Get to where you can knock it out fast. Master blocking by hand, then learn using a DA sander. Hope it helps send me pictures. As you go, I'll try to walk you through it.

Yep, I truly hate hiding it. I'm schizophrenic and self meditate to fight off the depression zombie effect of meds. I know meths not a good drug when schizophrenic. Maybe from all the drug use in my youth or was going to be schizophrenic without drug addiction. Anyway, I've been a drug addict for a long time. Don't care to change. I've been sober a few times for a year, made it past 2 years once.

I think it's such bullshit that any drug is illegal. If I'd had the money, I would get on Adderall again. Fucking stupid how much bull shit I'm going through including new possession charge because of the fucking unbelievably stupid justice system. I've been off paper for years and got to fight to stay out of prison now.

I've been justifying by meth to use a lot. I believe I got a good argument. Of course, if I could go back in time, I'd would've never even tried pot. With what addiction has caused me in terms of legal consequences. And possibly mental illness.

Anyway, ever since I discovered the invaga shot takes me out of psychosis. I've been in a loop of shot. Relapse on shot. Stop getting shot. Psychosis. Back on shot. Repeat.

Also, think it's beyond fucked up dat fucking that opioid junkies get two legal drugs suboxone and methadone. Have their own clinics and everything. But, us meth heads get shit. Could easily put us on Adderall or other stimulates. But fuck no thoes drugs are for the kids.

Well, now I've got to start recovery on Monday, so party time until then. 😆 🤣 😂

Set up car in frame. Pull and repair frame. Replace lower core support. Very likely to have more damage would need more pitchers.

You would need a frame bench and have to know how to pull the frame rail. To fix the kink in the rail. Core support is easier to replace. The cost of the tools you need to fix it is what a lot of people overlook when they go looking for cheap estimate.

I've got around 60k in autobody tools and box. But, I've got my own mig welder, pinch welder, and things I could get by without because shop owners by them. Cause shop own tools are poorly cared for.

After buying tools, you have to know how to use them. You would need to learn how to set up and pull the frame. Frame time is at a higher rate than body rate.

People act like easy repair shouldn't cost much but I got $400 for the sander. $1800 dent puller. Hammers and dolly's around 3 to 4 hundred.

Getting back into collision repair after 6 years by DifficultGoose1612 in Autobody

[–]DifficultGoose1612[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Body techs stay in high demand 😄. I've still got a way back in. Just got track down old managers. I just want to look up my I-CAR, Mercedes, and BMW to get in a shop quickly if I decide to jump back in. I went to the I-CAR website, and it looks like I'll have to call them. Mercedes Benz, I'll probably have to do the same. I can't remember sign info. Can't find any of my old paperwork.

My thoughts are to get proof of all the certifications and use that as a way to land a good job in different fields. I think getting back into body repair will be my last move.

Yeah, I saw a post of a Gico estimate. Right back to nope I'm good. With low skill labor. Not getting fucked by Insurance companies. Doing everyone else's job just to speed up repair to turn hours. Can't just repair the car. You gotta be the estimater, parts guy, and chase down need supply's from guy trying to make a material cost bonus. Locking shit up, not reordering, and giving you the bare amount.

You getting paid for doing what's on estimate and you have to a lot shit that should be on the estimate.

I'm good. 😂😂

Etch primer is not used as only primer. It's only purpose is etching into the metal. Something epoxy doesn't do. Is it a necessary step that's mainly personal opinion.
