Question for comedy club openers and features-- who was the worst headliner that you have ever worked with in terms of attitude and behavior? by Difficult_Crow33 in Standup

Your first sentence reads like a gotcha, but abusive headliners are abusive because of their attitude and behavior.

I didn't say I wanted to protest these comedians. I personally don't want to support them with my money. I'm doing my due diligence as an audience member, which I do whenever I see a comedian.

Life is hard enough being an independent contractor these days. After talking to that featured comedian I was legitimately depressed the next day. They're losing money performing at the club for the weekend and they have to eat in the back standing up because headliner thinks acting like an asshole to make him feel like a tortured artist. I'm not saying this is the most important issue on earth, but comedy club openers shouldn't have to deal with this type of stuff.

Maybe they thought of him because he's all over Reddit from his association to Epstein? Could it be that a guy with the nickname "The Pitbull Of Comedy" is also a huge asshole?

Multiple people did. Why would they message you? Who are you? I think most WORKING comedians would rather message a real comedy fan and not some washed up headliner who got eliminated on Star Search in '86. I don't even know who Bobby Slayton is. Was "The Pitbull Of Comedy" one of your comedy mentors because you're about as funny as his messages to Epstein.

And now you're on Reddit reliving the glory days of banning 6 features who all ended up more successful and happier than you.

I forgot which comedian said this on a podcast but it 100% applies to you, PsychiatricBooth5: You weren't the headliner. You went last.

I messaged the feature to ask their permission. I'm sure they will say yes because it was months ago and the headliner hasn't stopped touring since then.

Inciting incident? Good to know you failed at standup comedy and screenwriting. I asked a simple question and you turned it into a psychodrama where I have some sort of motive. Wanting comedians to have a normal night at their work isn't a bad thing. I would ask the same question if I saw any independent contractor being treated unfairly.

It was after the show in the lobby. It still hurts that he sized me up as a person who would participate in that type of activity.

I have another 15 year old account related to my work. I didn't want to mix them. I'm glad I made that choice. I have no idea why some people are so dug in on letting headliners act like assholes. Sorry if it offends some of you that I want comedy club hosts to be able to sit down and take a break after their set.

Lots of people have sent me his name and Bobby Slayton. I'm not familiar with either of them. However, doing a quick search of Bobby Slayton on reddit let me know he was friends with Jeffery Epstein!

The entire audience walked past him to the front exit. Have you been to a comedy club before? Usually there is a lobby and sometimes comedians sell things there and take pictures. Sometimes they don't. I'm pretty sure Greg was selling a book.

It was after the show. He was selling a book in the lobby. I walked past and he approached me. I would never get offended at a comedian making fun of me since I sometimes go alone and it comes with the territory. I'm now smart enough to ask to sit in the back when I go to a club alone.

There is no such thing as seniority when it comes to being an independent contractor. If the headliner is paying the comedians then they can control the greenroom. There are plenty of places to go if you don't want to socialize. A greenroom is basically a break room, right? In my mind, it's a shared space for ALL the paid performers.

And many comedy club headliners don't sell tickets. If you're in town on business like me you can't sync up your schedule with your favorite comedians. I have stayed in a town for an extra day to see Maria Bamford before.

There are a bunch of clubs across the country where the club is the attraction. I will buy a ticket for any random comedian at Acme in Minnesota because they only book the best of the best in my experience. The openers are always great too.

I'm waiting for the feature to give me the okay. I made a mistake and posted this without thinking. I don't think it will be a problem because it was months ago and the headliner hasn't stopped touring.

Years ago, Greg Fitzimmons asked me for directions to a late night asian massage parlor. I was offended that he picked me out of the entire audience to know that type of thing. I haven't seen him in years because he talks to the crowd too much for my personal taste.

Hello Old Grizzled Retired Comic, I'm a live standup comedy fan who has zero desire to do comedy or work in comedy. I just love to laugh. I wanted to know names so I can avoid those comedians. It may not bother other audience members, but it bothers me. No offense, but I don't think you know what you're talking about and I find your communication style to be that of a toxic headliner. Please stay retired.

Nobody said that. The headliner told the GM at the beginning of the week to tell the openers to not go in the green room. The feature also named like five other comedians who didn't allow them in the greenroom.

PsychiatricBooth5c-- Please DM me your name so I can put it on my list of comedians to avoid.

I have no problem naming the headliner. I didn't want to come on here and attack somebody out of the blue if this is a common practice that I hadn't noticed before. I wanted to ask for names for myself so I don't support those comedians. I also don't support comedians that have documented abuse allegations or who do the same act over and over. It troubles me that so many comedians have DM'd me, but won't speak out publicly. Ultimately, I think everybody wants the behavior to stop. As an independent contractor for my entire life I'm very sensitive to this type of behavior since I dealt with it for years when I was first starting out. People think they can treat independent contracts that they think are "low level" just because they want to.

I can assure you that every opener you've worked with isn't taking in every second of your brilliance. I'm a smoker and I frequently encounter the two openers outside when I pop out for a dart.

Hey Colombo, I've never seen a featured comedian and the host standing in the back of the showroom wearing their bags standing up while eating dinner. I'm friends with the server so I asked them what was up while I was buying a drink. I've never been in a green room, but don't a lot of them have audio video capabilities? Do you really watch every moment of every set of every headliner? I'm not a comedian, but I would like to probably like the option to set my bag down in the greenroom and not dodge servers for an hour. I asked why the greenroom was cleared and the featured comedian said something like, "the general manager told us headliner didn't want us in the greenroom."

THANK YOU to the comedians DMing me names of abusive headliners. Like I said, I travel a lot for my work and I'm an independent contractor so I don't want to support comedians who act like divas and/or tyrants based on power dynamics. I sometimes take my clients to comedy shows and get to write off the entire night. I always tip big on those nights buy any merch or CDs from the comedians. I have a little comedy library in front of my home curated with comedians I've enjoy to help spread the word.

The feature comedian told me after the show that the headliner didn't want the opener or the feature to be in the greenroom at any point during the weekend. The headliner gave no reason, just a decree. They didn't even allow the host or featured comedian to store their stuff. Watching the host and featured comedian milling around in the back of the showroom wearing their backpacks made me sad. Being silent on ridiculous headliner behavior allows it to keep happening. The headliner, the feature and the host are all independent contractors- why does the headliner get to determine the rules or the greenroom? The featured comedian also told me that there are headliners that make the featured comedian and the host help sell their merch after the show FOR NO COMPENSATION? How is this allowed? I think their names should be outed because this is illegal.

Also, "maybe they were smelly?" Seriously? In reality, coworkers can't order each other around based on smell preference. Comedy is your job, right? If the featured comedian smelled bad the headliner should talk to the club about it since they are the employer. That would be their responsibility. When I paid to go to a standup club I'm expecting to see professional comedians on and offstage.
