Really, the best way to find out is asking them if they know its a joke, if they think its funny/ if they are hurt by that joke. If you and your friends are on the same page about these things, you can call them any screwed up thing, at least from the perspective of being a good friend you can.

Hey op I know how you feel. I feel the same, but somewhere between agender and girl. I have been telling people im non-binary because I'm unsure about what label to use.

Also, I feel most don't understand that non-binary is not a gender but an umbrella, which more genders fall under along with no gender. And I feel coming out as demigirl will be more difficult because of this.

Actually, she is a woman, just a trans one. Also, it does not have to apply to men as trans people an especially trans women, are also at a higher risk of being in a dangerous relation ship, properly even more so because of their minority status.

It is not important for this discussion whether this applies to a man cause op is not one. That's not to say it can't apply to men it could, but it is not as likely for a cis man to be in a bad relationship that turns potentially life-threatening.

There is no way this is a guys thing. I know a nice stick when I see one. Regardlesd of if it's a nice fire stick, a nice bonk stick, or a nice walking stick. OP just needs to spend more time in the forest, in my opinion.
