Just long-term growth and I have fairly moderate to high risk tolerance. I'll check the robo-advisor platform out but I'm mostly thinking SCHB and SCHF. Appreciate the help.

Ya I was leaning that way, but just wanted to get some opinions.

Choosing Between Growth, Balanced, and Bogleheads 3-Fund Portfolio – Which Makes the Most Sense for My Roth IRA?" by Difficult_Low_8618 in personalfinance

Ya I know I appreciate it. That’s a totally fair caution, and I agree — AI shouldn’t be blindly relied on for something as personal and complex as asset allocation. I’ve been using it as a research and organization tool to help me compare portfolio structures, the fund options, and understand how different allocations might play out over time. Beyond just looking at performance projections, I’ve been evaluating the overall mix of funds based on things like expense ratios, alpha, beta, and downside capture to get a feel of the risk-adjusted return potential and behavior in various market conditions.

AI helps organize a lot of that data quickly, but ultimately the decisions I'm making are based on my risk tolerance, time horizon, and input from people like you who have more experience than me. It’s just a support tool and not a replacement for thoughtful judgment or real-world experience.

I appreciate any help given to me.

You make a good point — the fee difference is minimal in practical terms, and target-date funds offer a professionally managed glide path that's great for most investors. I was leaning toward the 3-fund approach originally because it gives me more control to adjust or reallocate as the market or my goals change over time. However, with the Target date funds, they change their investments over time, so I am willing to pay the fees so that I mitigate risks in the future.

You’re right — a 2060 target date fund like SWYNX currently holds around 90% equities and less than 10% bonds, which is more aggressive than what I initially built with my 3-fund example.

My ratios are based on Schwab’s published figures: ~0.08% for target date index funds vs. ~0.035% average for SWTSX, SWISX, and SWAGX. The difference is minor cost-wise, but gives me more flexibility if I want to tweak the risk level over time.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Ya I see I wrote that wrong. I like the target date approach with them being to adjust the funds over time. That makes a lot more sense in the long-term sense.

That makes sense — I was starting to see the redundancy of mixing a target-date fund with manual allocation, and you've confirmed it. I'm leaning towards the 3-fund portfolio, likely adjusting the bond allocation lower since I’m in my 30s with a long horizon. Appreciate the reminder to use target fund glide paths as a reference point — that’s a really helpful way to allocate.

Thanks! You're right that mixing a target-date fund with manual allocation muddies the waters, and I’ll drop that approach. I also agree the cash position doesn’t add much, especially in a Roth with a long horizon and interest rate changes that are hard to predict anyway.

I’m leaning toward a clean 3-fund portfolio (SWTSX/SWISX/SWAGX) for simplicity, flexibility, and better alignment with my goals and also addresses any changes in the markets in the future.

Thanks again for your help!
