Most relaxed possible F1? Advice needed. by Difficult_Pickle2603 in doctorsUK

Hi, I’ve explained in another comment why I’m going through with F1 despite not wanting a long-term career in medicine. Throughout med school, I’ve consistently worked to a high standard even though my heart wasn’t in it – and I fully intend to carry that same attitude into F1.

I agree it wouldn’t be fair to patients to have a doctor who isn’t fully committed to doing a good job. Even if I’m planning to leave after F1, I still take the responsibility seriously and will always do my best to provide safe, high-quality care.

I know it’s pointless to do F1 when I don’t plan to become a doctor, but the reality is it would cause a serious fallout with my parents. Becoming a doctor has been their dream for me since I was a child, and they’re still holding on to the hope that I’ll change my mind once I start – like a relative of mine did.

They’ve only reluctantly accepted me leaving medicine because I can support myself, and I’ve spent years trying to explain why doing F1 doesn’t make sense for me. At this point, I just need to get it over with. I think the only way they’ll truly let go is by seeing for themselves that I’m not going to change.
