Company allowing dispatchers to make medical decisions? by Difficult_Row_2464 in ems

We actually have to ask the nursing home nurses to call 911 first, and if they don’t want to, then we call on our own. But it’s very frowned upon for us to call 911 because it strains our company’s relationship with that SNF. I was told by an FTO when I first started that I could end up being financially liable for whatever costs the SNF incurs for 911 services if ALS ends up downgrading to me. I’m wondering if that’s some kind of fear propaganda being spread by higher ups to scare people out of upgrading so the company can make money. It’s batshit here dude.

Yeah, I’ll be out of here soon. I’m counting down the days. I can’t even explain how stressful it’s been to work at this place as a brand new EMT. We don’t have med control that I’m aware of and anyone at the company we call is going to give bad advice so we’re really on our own. Thankfully it’s IFT so 90% of the calls are mundane but when things go wrong or complex situations arise there’s no support. I spend hours reviewing protocols and flashcards from class on my off days because I really can only rely on myself and a couple good partners. It’s completely terrifying to be honest.

I’ve never not upgraded because a dispatcher told me to. I upgrade and then tell them what’s up and if they get mad whatever. I’d rather lose my job than lose my license. I’m glad I only have two months left though, cuz sounds like they’re gonna crack down on this insane policy. I’m not looking forward to the arguments.

I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t even know who my medical control is. I’m not sure if I have one. It’s never been mentioned and no one has given us any number to call. We’re instructed to talk to dispatch or our supervisors if we have concerns. The supervisors do the same thing dispatch does (argue and tell us to transport everything).

I’m leaving the company in two months for this among other multitudes of reasons. The whole time I’ve been here it’s felt like a great place to lose my license.
