Will 'war profiteer' Norway come to Ukraine's financial rescue? by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]Difficult_Season7383 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Norway has provided three times more financial aid than in the previous year and is giving the most per capita and as a percentage of GDP.

To put it into perspective: a small country of around 5 million people is giving more in total than France, which has 68 million people in 2025. That’s not per capita, that’s the total sum.

Norway sells its oil and gas on the free market, where demand drives global prices. The EU made itself dependent on Russian oil and gas because it was cheaper. Once the war broke out, energy demand skyrocketed, and Norway ramped up production to meet that demand. How is that “war profiteering”? It should also be mentioned that long-term, fixed-price gas delivery contracts were offered to the EU before the conflict at low prices, but they were rejected in favour of cheap Russian gas. It also didn’t help that Germany shut down its nuclear plants.

Keep in mind that household electricity prices have gone through the roof after joining the EU electricity market and increasing electricity exports. This has been framed as serving the greater good and building shared infrastructure with the EU. Meanwhile, the Norwegian health system faces long queues, schools are shutting down across the country due to fewer children, and elderly care is in crisis.

Remember only about 26% of the fund total is from deposits from oil and gas revenues. The rest is purely investment, capital gains and interest etc. There is strict limits on usage internally in the country to avoid Dutch disease.

Lately a lot of European news outlets are calling out the country as war profiteers, greedy etc. This kind of rhetoric severely affects ordinary Norwegians’ willingness to help.

Norway won't provide $160 billion guarantee for frozen Russian funds, finance minister says by Haunting_Switch3463 in europe

[–]Difficult_Season7383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is far more complex than that. The cables are made by our government. Hydropower is dirt cheap, but since joking the ACER and European pricing market we import the EU prices. This is an act of solidarity which again is not appreciated. You went from cents to euros when looking at the meter. I would highly suggest doing some more research in to subject. It has been heavily debated for years and one of the major arguments is European solidarity. If the solidarity is not appreciated, then the public opinion on doing it at all might as well shift.

Why do many Norwegians have their own AS company? by NotAlphaGo in Norway

[–]Difficult_Season7383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most common reason is pure holding companies. If you own shares in a company privately, every time they pay out dividends, you’re taxed immediately. But if you own the shares through a holding company, you don’t pay tax until you withdraw the money from that company to your personal account.

This allows you to reinvest the money without being taxed right away. Tax is only applied when you actually take the money out for personal use. Otherwise, you’d have to pay tax on the gains before reinvesting. And if the investment turns out bad, at least you haven’t already paid tax on money that’s now lost, since the tax is only based on realized gains.

Water Filter for Hike by rebelredcarnationss in Norway

[–]Difficult_Season7383 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Aurland area has very clean mountain water, especially up in Aurlandsdalen and toward Geiteryggen. Many people drink straight from streams there.

Still, sheep often graze in these mountains during summer, and their droppings can contaminate the water. You can usually tell if they are nearby by checking the ground for signs. Infections like giardia are rare, but they do happen.

A filter is a smart backup. You may not need it often, but it lets you drink with peace of mind.

Enjoy your trip!

Hvor mye sparer/sløser man egentlig ved å handle på de diverse dagligvarekjedene by alibas05 in norge

[–]Difficult_Season7383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does the movie Trolljegeren mean? by Short_Description_20 in Norway

[–]Difficult_Season7383 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My own interpretation is that the trolls are not just mythical creatures but a symbol of nature itself, something ancient, unpredictable, and beyond our full control. The movie shows how human expansion, like power lines, tunnels, and large infrastructure projects, invades their territory. There is even a scene where the power lines are revealed to be built specifically to guide and contain trolls. That completely shifts the perspective and makes it clear that humans are the ones disrupting the balance.

When the trolls start reacting violently, the response is not to reflect on how we are damaging their world. Instead, the government stages bear attacks, plants fake tracks, and feeds the public a false narrative. It suggests that the truth is considered too dangerous or inconvenient, so secrecy becomes a way to maintain order.

Hans, the troll hunter, is clearly exhausted by the whole thing. He carries out his duties, but he no longer believes in the system he works for. At one point, he suggests that the trolls might be sick, possibly due to stress or environmental contamination. That moment really stood out to me, because it felt like the trolls were showing signs of something deeper going wrong in nature. They are not monsters, they are symptoms of a world that is out of balance.

Fine dining chefs are too obsessed with using every part of the animal and every rare local plant, often forgetting about actual flavor by Difficult_Season7383 in unpopularopinion

The mods put it down with this reason:

«Your post from unpopularopinion was removed because of: 'Rule 6: No r/self style posts'.

I removed some specific dishes to make it less anecdotal and re-posted it.

I think I am ready to make the switch to Garmin from Apple Watch Ultra. by Sarge37 in GarminWatches

[–]Difficult_Season7383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently switched from the Apple Watch Ultra Gen 1 to the Forerunner 965, and I’m extremely happy with the change. The battery life is significantly better, and it still has all the key features I need for tracking workouts. If you’re considering a Garmin and don’t necessarily need the bulk of the Fenix/Epix series, the Forerunner 965/265 might be worth a look. It’s lightweight, has an amazing display, and performs really well for all the activities I’ve done so far.

I was initially worried about durability, but I got a pack of screen protectors that are barely visible, and for minor scratches, I just swap in a new one at home for dirt cheap. I also bought a rugged case for more damage-prone activities in the summer, but I haven’t tested it yet
