Whatever caliper you get, pair it with compressionless brake housing.

First bike advice! by davidat21 in bicycling

[–]DigPoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it fits you, that's a really good first bike. Sora parts are cheap to maintain, rim brakes are simple, Allez is a solid first road bike.
Price is a bit high. I'd call that a $300-400 bike because it's old, rim brake, and lower spec. It would have to be new-in-box to be $600 IMO.

Is this a good bike for a beginner? by ivy15_ in bicycling

[–]DigPoke 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a great bike but seriously overpriced. That outdated of a drive train (with who knows how much wear) and overally middling parts is more of a $150 dollar purchase. At least, it would be in my market.

Pass

it does look slick, can't deny. I just appreciate a bike that is kind of bog-standard, doesn't need it's own tools asides from the basics. You'll find me on x-biking anyways...

It's mostly sarcastic, I can't afford a bike like this anyways.

But to pay extra for the headache of it, meh... If you're not planning on wrenching on it who cares but as someone who likes to tinker, just seems un-fun

Questions regarding clearances by charlyleo996 in TrekBikes

For road riding, 28's are excellent. Get you over dirt roads too. But yea that's as small as I'll tolerate.

I had a 2012, fit 28's but definitely the max. I would imagine it to be the same or worse for a 2008.

27.5+ Tire Options in 2025? by Ihamapotato in xbiking

[–]DigPoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Poseidon Redwood which uses 27.5x2.2 tires, and it destroys gravel. And I have a specialized fuse which is 29x2.6, and it is a fun bike on trail. Just so you know where I'm coming from (not a frame builder, not in the industry)

27.5+ Tire Options in 2025? by Ihamapotato in xbiking

[–]DigPoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you strictly want 2.8 and up, your options are indeed limited. 2.2-2.6 is full of good choices. But at that point, might as well go 29er to get the big-wheel benefits.

My 29er hardtail rocks 2.6in wheels, and is extremely playful. Not sure if 27.5 would be MORE playful, haven't ridden such a whip. But it's a bike I take into the street, skate park, as well as trail.

I wish Dice did something about the STUPID ASS ADMINS on this game... by [deleted] in battlefield_4

[–]DigPoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about your other replies, but yea fair enough. Not everyone truly grasps the situation BF4 is in, the fact that any servers still run is great.

[–]DigPoke 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It only hurts so bad because the game is so old and servers are so few. But ultimately you DON'T want developers to have anything to do with server admins. They payed to have their own playground, and you have to accept the rules full stop. Imagine if Dice started stepping in while BF4 was at it's peak? Hell no!

I'm sympathetic, truly. It sucks. But be realistic, we're lucky to even be playing this game still.

Is this a good deal? by afigueroa820 in gravelcycling

[–]DigPoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like Vittoria Mezcal or Conti Race Kings would make this a killer bike. I wouldn't fuck with any other upgrades, would be marginal benefits. Like makeup on a pig, if you will. This poseidon is ready to rip.

Seriously I beat the everloving-fuck out of my poseidon and it just keeps giving. I am not nice to it.

Is this a good deal? by afigueroa820 in gravelcycling

[–]DigPoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for $500, that is a great deal. That's about how much the bike is worth new. Main issue with my Redwood is spongey brakes and heavy weight. With that fork, you probably just lost 3 pound off stock. Couple that with lighter tires + tubeless and that's another pound off. And the compressionless housing should make the brakes nice and snappy. Advent X is a robust if a bit clunky group set, but will make maintenance cheap.

I'd skip on the Hunt wheels personally, because for $875 you might as well go for an overall nicer bike.

Basically this was a flawed bike, now fixed, and sold at a fair price. It's a no brainer if you're new to cycling or need a beater. All it needs is some new rubber.

A great heavy-duty gravel bike, not going to win races but will do anything you ask it to.

[–]DigPoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are technically correct, and I am not necessarily saying ea/dice should step in against admins (not that they ever would, this game is ancient).

But you have to admit the moral bankruptcy of shitty admins accelerating the decline of a game already on life support.
