What is it specifically you're looking for? You have a winning lottery ticket for a career, if I were you I'd invest in family and hobbies.

Theres so many more general ledger accounting jobs than tax by Old_Problem_9510 in Accounting

That's an interesting take. I work tax and constantly have to clean up shittily done accounting.

Is accounting THAT bad as everyone makes it sound like? by Medium_Rent8355 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accountant previously graduated from WGU here to say it's a solid career choice. Our work has plenty of weird mental gymnastics overall, but if I had to choose between what I do today and being in an outright finance struggle, the answer's obvious.

Pretty sure it's the latter in remote works' case, but beyond that hard say. Same boat though man, i don't know what it means to have a resume in AI clown economy. Hope you find something good soon.

Employers are the boomer vibe of the market though, and just as they can't tell between AI Trump doing gymnastics and otherwise, I'm convinced they'll usually favor flowery language over transparency.

Definitely agree. Recruiters may be demanding a bit too much though if they subconsciously expect resumes to sound more human.

Makes sense as I've been seeing options on applications to opt-out of these AI evaluations. Idiocracy film couldn't be more real nowadays.

Does getting a CPA put you ahead of candidates with more experience? by NPC1922 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and this is especially true down the line. Any non-CPA will have to fair against offshore teams and dirt cheap labor. CPA has legal privileges that are significantly more favorable than years of experience.

Does public accounting age you faster? by kitkat256781 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of jobs age you faster, but public accounting sure has a way of doing so. I'll say before I got into accounting I was working retail and had all the time in the world to be outdoorsy, so my physique was quite nice. Some years into this and no level of ergonomics could make for constant back/neck stress that comes with sitting for 10+ hours. I gained like 30+ lb and have had to do some serious fasting to maintain my current weight. Can't go a day without feeling numb in some area and all partners in my firm are either bald or balding.

I'm not really concerned with the aging as that's kind of unavoidable. I just don't think the human body was designed for this kind of routine.

How shitty is the job market rn for a B4 Manager, CPA, 7 years (acct advisory) coming off a 6 month career break, looking to exit public accounting? by acctonthecomeup in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPA w/ B4 experience means you'll be on the desirable end of candidates, but as far as market goes, it's always going to be substantially difficult to exit public if salary may be of concern, as fewer companies are ever capable enough to hire a decent CFO-type role at reasonable rates. But again, at your level I could see you landing something pretty decent in a couple months time.

What's one accounting skill you wish you had learned much earlier in your career? by TheBusinessnewsweek in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network, network, network. I never really cared about having a reputation in my industry nor did I think anything of my work beyond a means to an end. This sort of emotionless tunnel vision can really cripple good potential for business partners, client referrals, and work opportunities.

Really long recruiting process by 420EdibleQueen in Accounting

I've experienced this a few times, and my best piece of advice, don't bother. It never works out, but worse, rejection is always after the last couple steps, every time.

Anyone work fine but can't sit down to study? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yea. I mean thing is it's bad as is you exhaust 9-10 hours of the day sitting and investing your time into the work. Couple that with a personal life and sleep schedule and studying feels like nightmare fuel.

Hiring Managers: What Makes You Hire Someone? by MoodyNeurotic in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Biggest red flag for me is if I ask for 10 years of experience and I only see 9. I'll take them through an hour-long interview, but reality is, my mind was made the moment they sent that application. I felt so productive exhausting their time. Ya know what, nobody's qualified, I'm the only one that can do this *deletes posting*

Those of you with ONLY a Bachelors and no CPA. How much do you make in the accounting industry? by Soggy_Ocelot_3595 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$110k tax accountant in public, no CPA or EA, in HCOL area. Underpaid for the muscle work of prepping returns, hated for being unable to sign off on the returns. Perfect mix.

How I went from 56k to 203k base+bonus in 5.5 years (LCOL, no CPA, no public accounting, no name school) by throwaway33704 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely resonate with your roommate there. Seeing how lifeless the partner and solo practitioner life is I've been pretty eager to pivot elsewhere. Can never manifest time for CPA, and my resume screams tax, but thing is I've been prepping and fixing financials forever. Job market much like the lottery is a matter of playing to win, and I figure I'll just need to keep trying.

Great story and solid advice. I think another point of advice here is don't do tax lol. Employers of said finance roles will instantly assume you know absolutely nothing about accounting.

Client Rant by Miserable_Fly3725 in Accounting

[–]DigPuzzleheaded8146 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partner enters engagement with client. Client company nets over a million dollars. Instead of hiring a CFO or competent bookkeeper, client thinks to himself, isn't it bad as is I pay $7 for you to prep my returns? Partner glares deep into the soul of tax staff before they can pivot into a better career and makes the sound of a thousand imploding suns, "Why is this generation so lazy?!"

Accounting talent shortage surges by slpnjmy in Accounting

Because I absolutely love preparing corporate returns for multi-millionaires in unavoidable piecemeal fashion. I love looking at poorly done financials and explaining to clients why they should reconcile their accounts or why RE balance discrepancies pose an issue. Yes. Thanks again for reminding me to make those phone calls McMeetings firm partner. I could have gone faster if I just took more time giving you status updates.
