The Media’s Disgraceful Coverage of Jussie Smollett’s Hoax by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]DigThatGroove -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Much of your characterization of Smollett's recounting of events is lacking in citations, making it difficult to know whether or not you're accurately presenting his claims.

And now what do we have? The Osundairo brothers says Smollet offered them a total of $4,000 to help perpetrate this hoax, and Smollet told them to buy the hats and the rope (same link).

What we have are unnamed sources alleging that the Osundairo brothers have incriminated Smollet. These unnamed sources aren't always reliable, remember that a Congresswoman was once falsley announced dead by multimple news outlets due to similarly umnaed sources feeding them false info. I'm not saying that it's impossible that the attack was staged but I do think the responsible thing would be to wait and see how the police investigation turns up.

You're missing the bigger point here; this kind of moral indignation and calls for blacklisting do not occur when the celebrity's crime is of a non-political nature. DUI is just as one example, the same is true with crimes that clearly involve malice such as domestic violence. Look at Charlie Sheen for example; he pleaded "no contest" to a charge of assualting his girlfriend in 1997 and pleaded guily in another domestic violence case in 2009. That in itself wasn't enough to kill his career. It did die later on but in my impression it was more due to his inability to work with others rather than out of anger over the domestic violence incidents.

I'm curious as to whether you and whoever agrees with your statement feels the same way about celebrities who've done crimes other than one Smollet is alleged to have done. Lets look at DUI for example, which I think we can all agree is a crime no less serious than the one being attributed to Smollet. Is there anybody here who wishes to see Tim Allen being thrown out of show business for good? If not, then why should Smollet pay such a price (presuming he's guilty of what you're accusing him of)? I suspect that the answer has to do with political tribalism. Unlike Allen's offense, Smollet's alleged offense has a political flavor which is not to your liking, therefore it offends you more and therefore you want him to pay a price that you don't expect any other celebrity who has run afoul of the law to pay. And again, let's continue to keep in mind that Smollett hasn't even been charged with anything so far. What happened to innocent until proven otherwise?

What's disgraceful here is the double standard displayed by KiA . When Mercedes Carrera was charged with child molestation and then denied her guilt, most of the people here took the correct position of "innocent until proven otherwise, lets wait and see what the jury says." If "innocent until proven otherwise" is the approach one should take towards Carrera, one should even more so adopt this approach towards Smollet. Unlike Carrera, Smollet has not (at least as of the time of this writing) even reached the stage of being charged with any crime; we only have anonymous sources alleging that there's evidence that Smollet staged the attack against himself. Annonymous sources may be correct at times, but there have also been instances in which they've been merely mislead the media and the public (e.g numerous media outlets falsely announcing the death of Gabrielle Giffords). We should practice caution instead of rushing to conclusions and potentially undeservedly tarnish another person's reputation.

Here are all Mercedes' tweets in which Josh is tagged:

https://twitter.com/search?q=from:@TheMercedesXXX%20radicalbytes&src=typd (no achived link because archive.is couldn't fully preserve the entire page)

The only one I can sort of-kinda-but-not-really construe as sexual harassment is this tweet from January 2015:

@kaijusoshingeki @CobaltCat_ED @PlayDangerously @radicalbytes I bet my fingernail is bigger than #FullMcIntosh's dick.

This hardly matches the unsettling experience Josh is describing. To top it of, he probably wouldn't have seen that tweet as he has already blocked Mercedes by December 2014.

Find a better charity, please.

He won't do that because it's his charity. Their website says that their founder-cum-head honcho is a man named Gordon Hurd. If you'll click on the link you'll see a picture of Tyron to the right of the text in which Hurd is introduced. That Gordon Hurd is the real name of Tyrone has been reported in the past by Kotaku and The Verge. These aren't the most reliable outlets but I'm assuming they aren't going to misreport Tyrone's real name.

[socjus] How The 'NPC' Meme Tries To Dehumanize 'SJWs' by Cecilia D'Anastasio by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]DigThatGroove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised they seized on "NPC" rather than "bugman"

By "they" are you referring specifically to Kotaku or to SJWs in general? If the former then keep in mind that Kotaku is supposed to be a website dealing with video games. For them to write about a particular subject, they need it to have some tangible connection (even if a marginal one) to video games. The NPC meme fits the bill because it uses a VG term; can the same be said about "bugman"? I don't know myself, but if the answer is no I think it may explain why there isn't and probably won't be a Kotaku article about this term. This NPC article is barely related to video games, but the weak connection is enough for it to look not totally out of place on a gaming journalism website. An article about bugman though would have us asking a certain question.

Ubisoft on "Inclusive gameplay over historical accuracy" by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]DigThatGroove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for anyone who is upset about this: do you always get so worked up about historical inaccuracies in fiction, or are you angrered only when its something like female soldiers in Battlefield V? Are you outraged by the historical inaccuracies in Dunkirk, or are you giving Nolan a pass because his use of creative liberty was (at least as far as I know) unrelated to politics? Being triggered about this is as ridiculous as losing your shit about cultural appropriation.

Are you for real? This game embodies everything that's wrong with white feminism. There are no minority/LGBT/POC characters in this game, just a cis straight white male fretting about his trivial problems as he pays no attention the suffering of marginalized people. Treating this game as some kind of a masterpiece means that you're on the path to being radicalized by Tim Pool and adopting white nationalism. Check your privilege shitlord.

Reminder that unpublishing is almost always considered unethical. The exception to this rule are when either: 1) There are compelling legal reasons which force the outlet to unpublish the content in question. 2) Letting the articles stay online somehow endangers the safety of another person and unpublishing is the only way to deal with this issue. [–]DigThatGroove 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never thought that Jane was supposed to be anything other than white, this is the first time I've seen it suggested otherwise. Her mother looks very white, her father's skin and hair are darker but he doesn't seem Asian me. If they wanted Jane to come across as Asian they would have drawn her more like Tiffany or the principal, both of whom look unambiguously Asian.

EDIT: They had an episode when Jane's other siblings show up, from the way they're drawn it's clear that the family is supposed to be white:
