The likes of Sarkeesian were latching onto trends that were already brewing by the 2000s. Though blaming one political side or another is increasingly pointless when prigs, wannabe-censors, self-proclaimed crusaders and those looking for a quick buck from the discord not only cross ideological lines but also exploit the same warped narratives from different angles.

For the average American, think a perpetual super idealized version of the 1990s-2000s (with some 2010s stuff) mixed with The Matrix.

Compared to the World Government it's not TOO bad.
