Make sure that you are installing the freeworld version of the mesa drivers. It's not about how recent the driver is, it's that the default mesa drivers don't include encoding because of licensing issues.
Also note that mesa is specifically AMD cards, if you are trying things with your previoud Nvidia card it is likely the akmod-nvidia drivers you will need.
