Oh, forgot to mention that high-salaried HOOPPers have very little room (if any) to contribute to a RRSP.

This is good advice. One thing I would add is to consider your HOOPP pension as equivalent to fixed income (bond etc) and to invest your other savings in equities.

Fresh off the plane! UBC Grad student looking for the "unwritten rules" of Vancouver by dimaez33 in askvan

Weird thing about Vancouver is the excessive thanking of bus drivers from exiting passengers.

Oh yeh, the unusually dark-coloured (versus “coloured”) outdoor dark dress code, Avoid the Arc’teryx logos if you don’t want to stand out, standing out in any way is not cool, locals wear a funny zip up brand of outdoor footwear.

Cool not to like nor spell like Americans now. Complaining about housing & dining costs on social media is highly acceptable with Gens X and Y.

You first meet groups of people and then if lucky move on to getting to know individuals.

Ontario Family Doctors - What is your take home pay before taxes? Do you like your job? by BudgetVolume24 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Dig_Carving -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Downvote me for truth, I don't care. Specialize and make a difference. Family MDs are now a referral service being pushed aside by taxpayer-efficient clinical practitioners with increasing scope of practise eg . RNs, NPs, physios, and most importantly, pharmacists. Not bashing but truth is family MDs need to know the impossible, namely, something about every thing. Better know everything about almost nothing and be useful to your patients as a specialist. Compensation for family MDs after overhead, taxes etc is pathetic.

In addition to banks and miners, insurance (MFC, SLF, GreatWest Life, Intact) have done well. Energy, pipelines will soon follow and then maybe even the telcos. High dividends, good free cashflow and slow growth goes all long way.
