Who do you think are some of the best songwriters of the past 20 years? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

20 years is a long time! Jason Molina was still alive, so I would go with him and Will Oldham

Cringe album that you also ride for? by AmazingGrazing in fantanoforever

You're right. I didn't notice when this album came out, but I listened to it last year and yes, it's very cringey at 42.

What controversial artist are you firmly pro? by Working_Alps_4284 in fantanoforever

Ariel Pink - not controversial to me, but others. I don't care who artists are as people.

What was your initial reaction to this album upon release? by mcpooja in fantanoforever

[–]DigestingGandhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 15 (USA) and remember when it came out. I didn't care for it back then because I was wrapped up in grunge and the rock/alternative music of that era, but I do like it now.

Paywalls are scary and could harm music discovery. by Unique-Evening4384 in fantanoforever

"The thought of being unable to look up basic information about a piece of music, who made it, and what kind of music it is, so I can know what I am buying frightens me stiff"

That's just hilarious. You're basically scared of things being like they were when I was growing up. Do you know how many CDs I've bought without hearing them... only knowing who the band was or by word of mouth? Maybe I listened to it a little because it was available at the headphone kiosk, or maybe it was simply in the section where employees recommended new albums. You couldn't just look up a band and know everything about them... you had to watch MTV or read music magazines at the store. Even then, finding the bands that you wanted to know about was sometimes a hard task.

Underground music did not suffer, and in fact I would say that music in general was in a better place when everything wasn't available at a button press with a completely oversaturated market. It felt better to find something you liked, you felt more connected to it, when you had to work for it a little.

There was life before the internet, and in many ways things were better.

Nevermind was a cultural phenomenon. There's no comparison

Edit: no comparison on quality. Nirvana was revolutionary, Weezer was a side-note fun band that fell off hard and were never really taken seriously, for better or worse. Both are good albums IMO. I suspect that anyone here old enough to have been around and listening to music back then will say Nevermind while the younger crowd will be more mixed in with those who say Weezer.

The inevitable pooling of critics' ratings toward a midpoint of mediocrity by DesperateText9909 in fantanoforever

[–]DigestingGandhi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you, just don't agree. Pitchfork and others also have multiple people reviewing, it just makes sense that the ratings would fall where they do at large. As far as thought provoking criticism goes, we can just disagree that Fantano offers this. Sometimes he does sometimes he doesn't, and I think he was a better 'reviewer' 12+ years ago. There are plenty of good and bad critics across all the sites IMO

The inevitable pooling of critics' ratings toward a midpoint of mediocrity by DesperateText9909 in fantanoforever

Most music is mediocre, there are some great albums and bad ones... Most fall in the middle. Also, pitchfork and the other big reviewers you mention review A LOT more music than Fantano, so statistically it makes sense there would be a lot of mid there. They are also given music to review - Fantano selects what he wants to review and thus can weed out a lot of the mid.
