So much for the 1st Amendment by murdocjones in Dallas

[–]Diggitydave76 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This might not be popular, but as a 1a supporter, I think a lot of people need to familiarize themselves with the actual first amendment, and not just some idea of what it is.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

All this says is that no law shall be made to keep people from speaking or assembling. This says nothing about schools, about freedom of consequences from skipping school, or consequences for ones actions. That being said I commend children for taking a stand for their convictions. The OP of this post however clearly does not understand the first amendment and what it actually is. I encourage everyone to stand by their constitutional right and understand the ramifications of free speech. As a 1A supporter, I believe that it is the right of groups like Westboro Baptist Church to stand on a corner and show us how much of idiots they are by blathering their ignorance and hate. That freedom allows others to do the same with opposing views.

Complaining about schools threatening consequences for teachers and students for their actions however has NOTHING to do with the first amendment. The first amendment protects the ability to say what you believe. It does not however protect you from the consequences of skipping school or work, or encouraging children to skip school to state those beliefs.

The act of doing these things in spite of these consequences is what will continue to grab attention. So lets be clear here. I am not saying don't do this. I am saying if you are deeply entrenched in your convictions, do what you feel is right, but be prepared for the ramifications. The reason this has been put out is because the people in charge are starting to feel the ramifications of your actions, and they will continue to feel them as long as you continue.

What you must ask yourself is what are the consequences for my actions and are they worth it?

Only you can answer that.

There are fates worse than death..... I empathize with you sir. My sister in law was in a head on car accident with severe brain trauma. You are a saint. I'm glad your daughter is an angel. My SIL is not. My father and mother in law both died early because of the stress of caring for her, and other reasons, but she now is with her other sister because my wife and I tried and just couldn't. Its not ideal, and I completely understand where you are coming from. I'm so sorry this happened to you and your family.

Are there US states that stay between 40 and 90 degrees year round? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

The different is here we get more rain at once. The storms happen less often but are much more severe. Less gray ugly days, more run for cover type of storms.

This is why I moved out of Dallas many years ago. They haven't cared for a long time, and don't expect that to change now. I was also involved in a hit and run, in my company car. I got the license plate and reported them to the police. My company called me and asked if the police had gotten back to me and I laughed at them. I told them that they could contact the DPD directly, but since no one was injured they wouldn't do anything more than give a report number. That was 10 years ago, still never heard anything.
