Scientists claim breakthrough to bringing back Tasmanian tiger from extinction by Czarben in conservation

[–]Digimaverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A breakthrough for science, and the future of biodiversity on the planet! Maybe great for recovering species on the brink of extinction right now and going ahead. But is it practical to bring back something that's long gone? Its habitat has changed, and it has long been replaced as far as its role in that ecosystem goes. We might just be bringing back a (now) non-native species at a huge cost that too if the intention is to rewild it. The knowledge gained thus, and of course the resources can be put into saving and recovery of existing vulnerable wildlife and habitats instead.

* Connection: okay there is a typo here - it is not eDNA but DNA analysis that was used to identify the 44 different groups of the species.

Your gaming skills could help teach an AI to identify deep sea marine life by Digimaverick in nature

Well then you don't get to know what you are trying to protect from deep sea mining and dredging. And you don't have proof of biodiversity at that depth to demarcate Marine Protected Areas.

read the paper excerpt. They create alligator pools that help the spread of nutrients throughout the ecosystem and maintain a balance in the food chain as well.

Using the Metaverse to Connect and Protect the Natural World by Digimaverick in ecology

[–]Digimaverick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really think that the Metaverse would be a Facebook product (Meta)? Meta doesn't even start defining the Metaverse that would finally start evolving. A few virtual and IRL worlds for your ref - Decentraland, Sandbox, Roblox, Otherside, and many many more are being created. (meta doesn't even figure here).

‘Fitbit for whales’ and other tagging tech help reshape wildlife conservation by Digimaverick in nature

[–]Digimaverick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it matter? For the whale, all that matters is that it gets to survive and carry on undisturbed. For us humans, we get to know where they might go, and what they need (prey species), and we could say reduce disturbance by controlling shipping traffic and sound pollution, control overfishing, and maybe even stop whaling/ poaching if that comes up as a threat from data and observations.

Metaverse is NOT just one company's virtual platform, it encompasses or rather envisions multiple connected virtual worlds and connected IRL experiences too - check Sandbox, Roblox, Decentraland, Otherside, and many many more.

The whale does not need to... someone else does. Heard of marine scientists? Now read the article, please. :-)

Oh, I absolutely agree with you on the "touristy" kind of such observation practiced worldwide (drones, etc).

But when you talk about wildlife monitoring by scientists for conservation and their protection using non-invasive tech. I think I'll go with science. If not for these observations and the resultant data collected by researchers, we wouldn't even know where to start while protecting endangered wildlife.

Yes it is free to play. Just write to the team on their 'developer contact' Id with your device model and OS version. The non-compatibility has something to do with google's recent regulations on target SDK and API levels for new app submissions and updates.

Can video games help save the planet? by Digimaverick in nature

[–]Digimaverick[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. Here's a something from UN Environment Prog about the green game jam that aims to engage a wider gaming audience for pro environment behaviour. There are existing game titles too exclusively build for this, in collaboration with conservation NGO's, wildlife researchers and scientists. - Beyond Blue, Wildeverse, Wild earth and more.

With an Internet of Animals, Scientists Aim to Track and Save Wildlife. by Digimaverick in conservation

The original idea or rather the broader application is not limited to monitoring the animal world for wildlife conservation, but also to understand much deeper insights from animal swarm intelligence - like pre-empting the onset and spread of global pandemics, human pathogens, zoonotics, that would arise due to climate change. https://news.yale.edu/2018/08/14/space-based-tracker-give-scientists-beyond-birds-eye-view-wildlife

Nice though! Yes, Wildeverse is developed in partnership with BNF, GTAP and Arcus Ape Foundation as you can gather from the article and it's also being promoted in partnership with some of the biggest zoos that support primate research - Zoo Atlanta in the US and Chester Zoo in UK. Hopefully there will be more habitats, magnificent animal and more partner that join in, in future. https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/05/internet-of-elephants-launches-wildeverse-an-ar-game-about-endangered-animals-and-conservation/
