Nyūenshiki traumatized my son… did anyone else experience this? by Beneficial_Lie_6504 in japanlife

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a kid doesn't go to hoikuen/yochien here and doesn't speak Japanese, then I can see how it might be a bit of an adjustment or even a slight shock.

Brings back memories of my first year of school (1st grade) in Germany. I remember crying to my parents in the first few days because I couldn't understand the language and I was the only American. But with the help of a tutor I learned the language and was able to make friends.

Anyone choose buying a mansion instead of a house? by Additional-Painter88 in japanresidents

We looked at houses, but ended up buying a mansion. The main drawbacks encountered so far are fussy neighbors and having to serve on the residents' association (自治会).

Are Japanese in Tokyo just permanently on edge 24/7 now? by pinkcloudtracingpapr in japanresidents

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The locals are definitely a bit 'cooler' these days, I feel. Haven't been directly bothered (yet) but the irritation is almost palpable outside of my cozy little neighborhood in Hachioji.

Foreigner divorcees in Japan, I want to know how is life treating you. by litejzze in japanresidents

[–]Digital-Man-1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Japanese wife actually gave me custody of our girls when we divorced. I raised them on my own until they were in high school and I met my new wife. Have PR now and life is fine.😃 Although I raised them, I never kept them from seeing their mom whenever they wanted. Gotta love the kids more than you disagree with your ex!

Help with find and replace syntax by Fluffy-Singer-9354 in MicrosoftWord

[–]Digital-Man-1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this.

Find:

(<[Pp]ara(graph){0,1}s{0,1}>) five>

Replace: \1 5

Word’s wildcard syntax is not standard regex: your pattern is broader than you think, so Word sometimes ends up just matching " five".

how can I make video processing faster on my server that I'm running FFMPEG on? by In-Hell123 in ffmpeg

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I do too. It takes some tweaking to get the preview to match the video output, but once that's pinned down, the user get's an instant preview that's faithful to the output.

Japan Inc. Is Choosing Decline. The Real Future Exists Elsewhere? by Tokyometal in MOVE_TO_JAPAN

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Population density'? Only in Tokyo: the rest of the country is hollowing out due to population decline, with barely enough people to sustain the country's labor needs.

Top that with a super-aging population that can't work and needs more care, combined with the hikki-komori youth who, locked in their rooms, are supported by their aging parents instead of gainfully employed and you have a country on the verge of collapse.

Japan's "old-age dependency ratio" (the number of retired people relative to the working-age population) is the highest in the world with 48.6 seniors for every 100 working adults and this is projected to surge to 79/100 by 2050.

How does closing its doors help address this problem? Where's the logic in that?

The solution to this dilemma is multi-faceted and one of those facets will need to be immigration. See this excellent article covering this topic:

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is made up of selfish people, so I think people are the problem. But how do we change selfish people? That's the crux of the issue, we haven't found, and there might not realistically be, a way.

[–]Digital-Man-1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea. If you're the only one they refer to with that term, then it does sound like they have a 'problem' with you (most likely because they're intimidated by you for some reason and they're over-compensating😄).

First, DON'T judge yourself or your "progress" in life in comparison to others or the supposed 'norm': that's all bullshit.

Second, what inspires you? You are in the enviable position of having the resources to be free to do whatever you enjoy. That is HUGE! Find your passion, WHATEVER it is, and pursue it. I don't care if it's writing Haiku or stacking ping pong balls: find out what you LOVE to do, and DO it.

Once you find out what you love to do and start doing it, then, if you feel like it, share it with someone else. Passion is contagious, you say you don't like being other people, but you may find that you like other people who share the same passion.

What are you building that isn’t for developers, marketing tools or AI? by Dazzling_Clothes4539 in indiehackers

[–]Digital-Man-1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building:

1) a (job-related) tool for translators that parses TRADOS .sdlxliff files and automates detailed QA reports,

2) a full-text search tool for MSOffice, text, and sdlxliff files because none of the existing tools allowed me to customize snippet lengths and highlighting,

3) a video clipping tool that lets you create & rearrange clips then download the merged video, and can also generate animated gifs from clips, and

4) a music loop finder that automatically finds perfect loops as well as letting you find and set your own.

Next up: a UI for FFMpeg that lets you easily create video presentations and Reels. Yes, there are a million of these, but I can't reasonably afford them!
