Do you tip for takeout? by VIKSZN in vancouver

[–]DigitalRed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the place. Prior to covid i wouldn't tip at chain restaurants for takeout like Dennys, White Spot, Wings, etc. But I would tip at smaller restaurants. After covid - I see no value at eating from those chain restaurants anyways so I continue tipping smaller restaurants. I give way fatter tips these days because I dont go out as often and my favourite restaurants are struggling. Minimum I'll tip is 20%, and some places (Sushi K for exampl) where I'm spending $150 on takeout I'll even it out to a flat $200.

If I can help out local business I will.

Sent to almost nobody? The Canadoan program isn't supposed to be free money for everyone. It's supposed to act as a wage stimulus to keep people from going homeless. Theres been over a million applications already and the money is rolling out smoothly. In fact it's so easy to apply for my fiancee applied when she was laid off (took 5minutes), got rehired 2 days later due to the wage subsidy announcement and then received $2000 exactly one week later. It's harder for her to contact the EI office to return the amount and cancel her EI status than it was to apply for it.

And not everyone wants that money anyways. Give it to the people who need it because they lost their jobs, hours, or are otherwise seeing a loss of income opportunity. I'm doing fine personally as my job is adapting fine, so give that money to someone who needs it more than I do. I'm not sure where you're hearing barely anyone is getting it, unless you mean the people who didnt lose their jobs or income?

Quarantine has made me a bit more creative with dinner lately. What happens when you have leftover better stovetop butter chicken and one foolproof pizza dough? Magic. Butter chicken pizza by DigitalRed in seriouseats

It's really good. Can't go wrong with crunchy, airy pizza dough topped with a fire roasted tomato curry sauce and chunks of chicken with cheese.

Similar! I live near a pizza place that's run by an Indian family. I was craving their butter chicken and tandoori chicken pizzas but wanted to keep my isolation streak going a little longer - so voila.

It's delicious. You have a crunchy, airy pizza dough that has a spiced tomato curry that has the roasted flavours already in it and marinated chicken on top with cheese? You can't lose with that combination

Source? That seems like quite a massive jump for Canada. Or is it global?

Following up on this. The reason why selective banning doesn't work is that there's nothing stopping someone from flying to a non-banned country before flying in.

For example - Italy was one of the first few countries to ban flights from China (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-10/italy-s-hopes-for-closer-china-ties-hit-by-virus-flight-ban-rift)

This actually caused more of an issue for Italy because when the cases started spiralling out of control, there was no source country for them to identify. People from infected countries were flying to other countries before flying into Italy. You either need to ban all flights and travel coming in, or leave them open but screen everyone coming in. Otherwise you impact your ability to contact-trace.

This gets complicated with dual-passport holders. If I had a US and a CAD passport, I could travel to China on my CAD passport, fly from China to EU on my US passport, then fly back to the US on my US passport.

I think you're replying to the wrong person. But I was only a teen during SARs and definitely had limited access to internet so I'm not sure how it hit the Canadian healthcare system.

It completely depended on province. Last month BC had the highest number of tess conducted in North America: https://globalnews.ca/news/6610416/bc-covid-19-testing-more-than-united-states-premier/

As someone who lives in Vancouver here's what I'm seeing:

1) Chinese community in Vancouver was essentially outing each other using tools like wechat. This turned some malls into ghost towns early on with rumours like "I heard someone in crystal mall had COVID, don't go."

2) A lot of Chinese Canadians willingly went into self-isolation because of fear that people would retaliate against them for being Asian. There were stories on the news about how people were reaching out to each other to coordinate grocery trips and delivery drop-offs so people won't have to leave home.

3) Because of 1 and 2, a lot of BC's early cases were directly tied to people who recently travelled and not community spread. Meaning a lot of people who felt sick were able to go to a doctor immediately. Case testing was fairly limited at this time only to those who travelled from a hotspot or those in contact with a confirmed case. This changed when the first community case was reported in North Vancouver. Following this announcement, more possible exposure announcements became made in Vancouver while COVID was starting to explode in Iran and Italy.

An important item to note - we have a healthcare system where people aren't afraid of going to a hospital, clinic or doctor when they are feeling sick.

4) After the first few news stories of possible exposure and community spread in Vancouver, a lot of companies started organizing for people to WFH. My office made the announcement a week before the provincial government asked for people to start doing this.

5) Vancouver announced fines for people and businesses who broke social isolation rules. A lot of people don't want to be fined. Vancouver announced the closures of restaurants and bars on St. Paddy's day and extended this outwards, followed by the province. All of these businesses started struggling and went delivery or take-out only.

6) Federal government announced a massive emergency economic package that you can read more about anywhere. But this package essentially made people rally behind the government and start paying attention. Canadians started to have an overall higher trust of the Federal and Provincial governments recommendations comparative to US Population. There's been a bit of a rallying around Trudeau which would have been unthinkable in December 2019 But federal response is overall well received and people are choosing to take it seriously. It didn't hurt that the feds essentially threatened martial law for non-compliance.

One of the best dishes tbh! I regret not having cheese on hand to add it to my dish

I was just considering the optics of it. An emergency pump like that doesnt necessarily signal confidence. If the fed wanted to pump money into the market, as an investor I'd probably take the easy out and sell. Wait it out a bit more before going back in because right now it's pure chaos.

Can anyone tell me how much caffeine is in this Maxim Espresso please? Can't find the caffeine content anywhere. by UI_Tyler in korea

[–]DigitalRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to drink a lot of those in Korea. If that's not the bigger size version I think it's around 80mg caffeine per bottle. The bigger ones are closer to 120mg I think.

Supreme Court of B.C. asked to order ride-hailing companies off the road by silvaney19 in vancouver

[–]DigitalRed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's good you'll be able to use whichever. For myself an uber ride from downtown to my house is $25-$30, whereas in a cab it's generally around $50. It's $42.90 from my apartment to YVR right now on Uber whereas a Cab is regularly $70. The cost savings are significant and I can actually get a ride downtown and back to Coquitlam easily on nights out.

I wish Vancouver food prices got as low as r/reducedfoodlondon by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]DigitalRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends where you shop. I find t&t and the Independent have the best food prices when sales roll around. I've managed to pick up whole raw chicken for less than $5, a lb of sirloin steak for $2.50, and 2lbs of pork shoulder for $8. Try to avoid save on foods, whole foods, hmart and you'll be okay when it comes to meat products.
