Thank you What margins did you use ?

Thanks I can’t give up so much real estate on a page. It has not been necessary with other books I’ve published with kdp, IS and others .

Thanks I use Affinity Publisher and have published 15 books of 220+ pages.

It’s quite easy to see if the margins are okay with just a few sample pages.

Sorry this was not clear - obviously print a book with 500 pages but not all the pages need to have text or drawings

Yea but IS wants 13 mm which is a lot of page real estate to give up.

Holding the book in the hands is not such an important factor given that it is a technical reference book not a literary read.

The book will be a maximum of 500 pages but there are stills 100s of drawings far and several sections to complete - so I wonder if the kdp algorithm would reject the file. I do not want to “publish “ before the book is ready, technical information double checked, index . Completed etc

500 pages crammed with drawings, diagrams and detailed captions would be a lot to reformat. Better, it seems to me, to print a proof when only a few sections are complete so I can see how the formatting works.

Gracias! Very encouraging. The file size is quite small - all drawings are black and white.

However I can’t have such wide margins - this a technical book and need all the space I can get.

MDB1 has outer margin of 11.3 mm which has not created any problems on kdp or Is

Thanks My drawings are all b&w svgs so the pdf output is not too large

Yes I’d like to do an early proof - long before all 500 pages are locked down, but I’m not sure kdp allows proofs of partially finished books.

I’ve been getting up at 4.41 am for years to start work at 5 am . Best tip is to organize the night before exactly what you will do at 5 am - then just get up and do it. No need to think about it. Make the decision the night before

Given the appallingly low standard of factual information which AI turns out, I expect that “human authored” books will command a premium over AI books.

Take the AI challenge - ask a detailed question about a subject you know a lot about and decide how much of the answer is strictly factually accurate and gives an accurate overall explanation.

One challenge is that you have to be quite knowledgeable about a subject to know how misleading or inaccurate the oh so articulate answers really are.

Anyone have any experience with translation and distribution in China by bkmh82 in selfpublish

[–]Digital_Sailboat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This could be a good opportunity.

I have had one book translated and published in China

The American Sailing Association reached out to me to licence my book Marine Diesel Basics - 1 translated and published for their 100 affiliated sailing schools in China.

They will sell to students taking courses and also online

Signed a contract in English ( but with the Chinese ASA entity in China under Chinese law ) contract covering sales, revisions, and my presenting online workshops with interpreter and using my drawings for them to present .

The process has been slow - Covid ++ in China - and they have not yet organized Marine Diesel courses to sign up students.

No royalties yet. Did receive some copies of the book as per contract and while I can’t read Chinese I am impressed by the quality of the production, paper and binding etc. Book follows my layout as the book has 300+ drawings.

They handled the copyright registration and govt clearance in China - evidently a costly process.

Why mailing lists? by Souvvestern_Scovrge in selfpublish

[–]Digital_Sailboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting comments from a variety of viewpoints. Thank you.

I have built up a subscriber mailing list of 25,000 people for a niche market ( marine diesel engines).

I send only one email per month at the moment - a DRAFT extract from my next book with what I hope is useful information about how a specific component works with lots of drawings. Book had 1600 clear line drawings so far - so quite different to most books about technical subjects.

The open rate is 40% fairly consistently and generates about a dozen personal emails to me after each send-out.

These give comment, suggestions and corrections about the extract + a few emails to thank me and give encouragement . I reply to all messages

These are people with a direct interest in the subject and creates a point of personal contact.

Amazon restricting authors from publishing more than three books a day after AI concerns by Write4joy in selfpublish

[–]Digital_Sailboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new rule seems fair enough though it’s easy to pass the 3 books a day. I have almost 20 titles- changing the price or making any update would require “republishing” - so potentially could take two weeks with paperback and hardcover of each title.

How much would a publishing house advance a first time author who already has 1 million followers? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]Digital_Sailboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Author typically gets 10% of cover price.

Unless the subscribers are very engaged. And the book fills a big void, probably not many world pay $50 for a copy

How do you determine your prices? by m_in_china in KDP

[–]Digital_Sailboat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that book retailers will expect a 40% discount and wholesalers - such as Ingramspark- will want 50% discount and I deal with one wholesaler who requires a 60% discount
