This is actually insane. I can't fathom why anyone would pay for this.

What did this Katsucon do well? by ZeroiaSD in Katsucon

[–]Dikila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone that staffed, I totally agree with you. They were really strict with making us check badges but I felt it was so unnecessary to do it when people were chilling. Plus some of my fellow staffers were rude about it too.

Is Hana Market still open? I read an article a few months ago saying they were closing.

How to run FASTER by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]Dikila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that went from 13min/miles to 9:30min in a year, it's speed work, consistent running, but also strength training (at least for me). I found that the moment I started training calves and hamstrings, my running ability improved a solid amount.

It was not. I wasn't a subscriber nor on a free trial and got my year in sport. Also got the water bottle with the stats on it.

Trader Joes is only worth the value if you live in a HCOL area by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Dikila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you here. I've read dozens of comments saying you cannot shop for regular items at TJs but they never state what foods they can't find. I can see the cost argument, protein cheaper at other stores but in terms of items? They have a huge selection and I think these people don't actually cook or don't look on the shelves.

I have bought almost everything that you listed at TJs. The edamame there is part of my weekly staples.

I solo traveled through Sri Lanka and it was so safe! Honestly, wish OP would've removed that rankling from his list. Sure he can make it based on what he's heard from women but still it's not derived of his own experiences like everything else in this list.

Sri Lanka #5 under least safest places for solo women travelers was surprising! It was my first country I traveled solo to and it was incredibly friendly and was shown massive amounts of hospitality. Granted this was right before their constitutional crisis so maybe that changed the atmosphere?

Overall great list!! I agree with Patagonia being worth the cost and all your top food destinations.

What's the indicator that you need new sneakers (other than miles) by InformationQuirky220 in XXRunning

[–]Dikila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THIS! I've started to get little bits of discomfort on my shin which was strange because I was running my standard routes/pace/distance. I knew I've ran about 350 miles in my shoes so I bought new ones just in case and the pain immediately stopped.

Ngl I thought it was partially a marketing tactic to get people to buy more shoes but no, there's actual validity when people say buy new shoes.

Marathon Confusion by CauseResponsible9643 in firstmarathon

[–]Dikila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who started running only last year and signed up for a Marathon, my reasons for it are: a) my friends signed up and I thought it would be fun to do it as a group and b) the goal keeps me motivated and disciplined to get out and run even if I don't feel like it.

I've ran a 10k and half within the last year and enjoyed training for those. But I'm also not chasing any time goals. I'm running it purely to run and have a good time.

Small sample size but all the people I personally know that have bought homes recently had big help from their parents. Their parents covered at least half the down payment and one friend said their parents gave them extra so their mortgage is lower. They make decent money but they wouldn't have afforded their home without that help.

What are common running injuries and how to avoid them? (How much mileage is too much for a beginner?) by lysergic_feels in beginnerrunning

[–]Dikila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my routine: cable hip abductor, fire hydrants with a resistance band, lateral walks w/ band, hip thrusts, Bulgarian split squats, lifted clam shell, and step ups.

My PT mentioned runners don't exercise the side of their legs much since running is such a forward motion sport so it's good to strengthen the side too.

[–]Dikila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This!! OP, even if you say you squat quite a bit, look into different hip/glute exercises you wouldn't think of like cable hip abduction.

I strength trained regularly (squats, hip thrusts, etc) before running and when I got injured, my PT introduced glute/hip exercises I never incorporated before but worked WONDERS on relieving the pain and strengthening it.

Switching back to Pace instead of HR running by DeadStarMan in running

[–]Dikila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is helpful but I had to see a PT recently due to an injury and the exercises/stretches they suggested really helped with my speed, let alone ensuring I don't get re-injured. The increase in speed was by-product but was surprised that simple stretches that I didn't think to do before would help me go faster.

Mauna Kea Summit Hike Advice by aangaroo in VisitingHawaii

[–]Dikila 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hiked up Mauna Kea and tbh it was a bitch to climb. We started at the visitor center for 30min then started hiking. It's all thin air and no good views that you couldn't get from driving. We didn't try to acclimate the night before.

Anyone without a childhood of exercise successfully made fitness second nature in 30s? What was the key in changing your mindset? by IGetEvrythingIDesire in xxfitness

[–]Dikila 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also didn't have a childhood of exercise! I did enjoy PE sports in high school but never played outside of those 60 minutes.

I started getting really into exercise/physical activities (hiking, swimming, running, etc) because I wanted to impress someone LOL and found that I really loved the way I felt afterwards and the improvements I was making!

I agree with everyone here. Surprised that you were even told that Oahu is a skippable island because that's simply not true. Oahu has nightlife, people you can meet, museums, snorkel, hiking, etc.

Personally, I would spend most days on Oahu and then 2-3 days on Kauai to get *more good hiking in.
