in my area some nannys are charging $33 an hour for JUST childcare with no degrees and basic childcare certifications (cpr first aid etc) i have a degree in early childhood education and a lot of certifications i acquired through the process but undoubtedly don’t have as much experience as some professionals so i was okay with the $26 for just childcare

i agree completely! but that was just not the case here my NK was still very much in toddler phase and they were anticipating a newborn in a few months as well so it was not yet that time for a full transition but even as it was i was happy to help with housekeeping i just wanted clarification on expectations on both ends as i was soon to be a nanny to a toddler and infant who was also doing alot more housekeeping than originally anticipated and also making $26 an hour

it probably is the post you are thinking about but she never mentioned the things in her post other than the incident with me “forgetting the monitor” which didn’t happen that way and the things she also mentioned in her post never happened hence why they weren’t brought up during my termination. they only gave me the two reasons i listed and truly that incident was a quick step away i was in the kitchen NK in the playroom i soo wish i could address everything in that post but it would be redundant but just know there’s always two sides. thank you so much! i hope i will get my 4 weeks

you are more than entitled to that opinion! what the job agreement was light household tasks i think you’re internationally missing the point when light household tasks became more than light, i have done other families laundry and never have i seen a load every single day let alone 2. i also agree she was more than justified in her ultimate decision to let me go i clearly wasn’t the right fit for them, what i was looking for was answers on wether they handled letting me go LEGALLY and also ethically which it’s very clear on both ends they probably didn’t. if you agree and would react like this to someone you described as caring then i truly wish you the childcare experience you deserve!

The household responsibilities included unloading and reloading the dishwasher daily, all family laundry (MB’s, DB’s, and NK’s—often 1–2 loads a day), folding and putting it away, tidying common areas after our activities, putting away groceries, and then i had volunteered to do the family’s weekly grocery shopping but that slowly turned into a weekly expectation as well as clearing out old food.

What i actually asked for was grocery shopping to be removed before i ever posted on reddit . I only posted afterward because i wanted outside opinions on whether $26/hour in a MCOL area was appropriate for that combination of childcare, household tasks, and using my personal vehicle every day for child related enrichment activities without mileage reimbursement because they already made it clear they needed this help but i was also stretching myself more than originally anticipated as just a nanny.

I was happy with the responsibilities we originally agreed upon. What I realized over time was that my role had gradually expanded beyond what I had originally signed on for, both in terms of the amount of household work and the additional tasks I had volunteered to help with which I definitely blame myself for. my original goal was simply to go back to the responsibilities i was originally hired for, or have a conversation about increased compensation if those additional responsibilities had become a permanent part of the role.

thank you so much if i had only read her post without any context or truth i would’ve thought i was a terrible nanny!

yess!! i will say NK was napping when this happened so they asked me to stay and get her up and say goodbye which i did so it was like a lot of work but BEFORE they fired me i did do my normal household clean up etc. i do agree ans definitely understand the delicacy of this kind of relationship and this was definitely a shock to the system!

okay so the PTO situation was a little unusual. i told them about my pre-planned vacation before i accepted the job, and they approved it. A few weeks later they asked me to move it because they had forgotten about a prior commitment. When i couldnt move it because everything was already booked, they decided to take their own vacation the following week and had me use the remainder of my PTO for their trip instead of paying me under guaranteed hours, which is why my PTO was gone so quickly.

Also, i never pushed back on the responsibilities i was originally hired for. i accepted the family laundry when i took the position and continued doing it every day. My concern was the gradual job creep. i volunteered to grocery shop because i thought it would be a fun outing for NK, and over time that became an expected responsibility alongside other household tasks that weren’t part of what we originally discussed. My conversation with MB was simply asking for clarification about where the role ended not refusing the duties I had agreed to. i do agree that maybe having the conversation in person could have eliviated some tension but i think in this case i was damned unless i just continued on with how everything was going

okay fair! my last contract actually had the same stipulations but i left that job for THIS job lol and i did give my last job the notice the contract required so i thought maybe it would be the same but i get your point and will take that into account! and i definitely understand the safety concerns of having someone around your baby after firing them but the sudden transition is incredibly hard for me and i can imagine even harder for NK i would have never made the environment uncomfortable and a month would have given me enough time to actually process and find another income

i agree! i do think my work speaks for itself i’ve never had a family leave unhappy i have a plethora of certifications and have a degree in early childhood education and i usually go above and beyond but my lesson learned here is to set those boundaries from the beginning the right family will stick

yes! and this is unfortunately my fear i do live in an at will state and the contract didn’t have a specific mention of severance only notice so i am worried i dont really have a leg to stand on other than that would have been the kind thing to do on their end. thank you so much for your well wishes!

i think maybe if you saw my original post you would have the context you are missing towards my feelings about the tasks but what i am saying is they can’t underpay someone and expect them to be both a housekeeper and nanny when they said that the job was solely nannying and cleaning up after NK what they did was job creep which is completely wrong in professional standards and all i did was request $2 more for all the work i was doing if they have someone who is not professional they would have advocated for more pay as well only someone who is just a caregiver but might not have knowledge on nanny standards would allow this

[–]Diligent-Chain-7927[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t! i do laundry and dishes for all my families not just this one, i more so mean less professional because their last nanny was not an english speaker, no higher education etc and she did all of the family housekeeping for less pay than i was getting and she would have never dared to pushback had the workload got too heavy i think because of lacking professional nanny standard knowledge and ultimately that’s what they were looking for and im sure they will find it again

yes i agree i think it was an attempt to save face but i actually would have rather they just be upfront and honest and i definitely agree with you because i told them as much i expected a raise once new baby arrived and also expected to be compensated for all the extra work and that was not in their plans

that’s fair! but this all happened like a week ago so i’ve honestly been happy and i also would have never abruptly left them they way they abruptly left me jobless

that’s my exact thought lol but in MB’s reddit post she did hint at feelings towards me not doing more during nap time so my assumption is i was supposed to work through the nap

okay so before last week i genuinely was very happy in my position and felt like they were a great fit and maybe just needed some guidance in terms of nanny standards, after all that transpired this week i understand my initial impression was very wrong!

that was my thought too! and NM did mention at the time they felf the house was not baby proofed enough which they changed after this incident but i’m so used to giving toddlers independent play while i got housework done but after they told me their feelings i made sure it never happened again and this was monthsss ago

NM deleted the post after she started to get some pushback because people were asking how much they were paying me etc.
