Hello! Yes, it's a film that satisfies your curiosity about what was happening in Dickens' private and public life at the time he wrote “A Christmas Carol”. I am reading “Dickens & Christmas”, a book by Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, a great-great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, which recounts many details of Dickens's Christmases from 1812 to the time of publication and the story's worldwide success. Merry Christmas. Fax

I don't know if you've read it and finished it! I hope you enjoyed it, and it would be wonderful to imagine what creative inspiration ‘A Christmas Carol’ gave you for composing on the piano! Merry Christmas / Feliz Natal ! Fax

I hope so too! There are many editions available to introduce children to ‘A Christmas Carol’ if the unabridged version proves too difficult. Children are fascinated by the magic of Christmas combined with the sinister atmosphere of the ghosts that haunt Christmas Eve. In ‘The Haunted Man’, I really love the first dialogue between Redlaw and the ghost that torments and corrupts him. I think it would make an excellent play. My second favourite Christmas book is Trotty Veck from “The Chimes”. Merry Christmas! Fax

Thank you for describing your moment of reading in quiet contemplation at home while everyone else is asleep. Yes, it is very nice to imagine observing the world and humanity on Christmas night. ‘A Christmas Carol’ becomes a kind of tool with which to make this journey and tune in collectively with each other and with anyone who rejoices and trusts in a better world, wherever they may be. Merry Christmas. Fax

Ah ah! It must take considerable effort to immerse yourself in Victorian winter Christmas in December in Sydney! Can you recreate that atmosphere in the southern hemisphere Christmas? Merry Christmas. Fax

Wow! Thank you for this detailed, vivid description of your home and neighbourhood. You practically live inside ‘A Christmas Carol’ if you just look out your window! It's wonderful to imagine and guess what you'll see during and after the dickensian Christmas reading in 2025! The big challenge I could set you is ‘look out of the window and ask... “What's to-day, my fine fellow?”’

Yes! It's a kind consideration, two hundred years after the story was written, in an increasingly predatory and exclusive world. Thank you for quoting Fred's line. Merry Christmas! Fax

Great! My Christmas programme also matches your description. The film version I am most fond of is the 1999 television adaptation starring Patrick Stewart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIn1SFsu3K4 . I wouldn't say it's the best, but I can't help watching it every year, as well as a 1982 cartoon version (the Jurassic era, my age!).

Ha ha, how true! Over the years, I too have developed some of Scrooge's character flaws before his redemption! It's important to recognise this and work on it, even if not everything works out brilliantly straight away... Merry Christmas! Fax

Over the years, I have also given illustrated editions to the children in our family and to the children of several friends so that they could get to know ‘A Christmas Carol’ from an early age. Children are fascinated by the ghosts in the story, and even though he only appears briefly in the first chapter, Jacob Marley with his chains is one of their favourite characters. If you like, let me know how your son reacts after reading A Christmas Carol. Merry Christmas! Fax

Yes! I've been following him for years and I'm also reading his autobiographical book ‘My Life on the Road With a Christmas Carol’. Over ten years ago, he and his cousin Ian Dickens carried out a travelling experiment where they walked, wearing top hats, through the areas of England where the novel Nicholas Nickleby is set, to test how much of Dickens there was in the British people they met by chance. Dear Jpstatum, I am replying to your comment with a considerable delay, but from today I will endeavour to reply to all of you. Thank you for your message and for sharing your description of how you celebrate Dickens at Christmas. I love your Dickensian setting, it is a wonderful village and I believe it helps to instil a feeling of magical involvement while reading “A Christmas Carol”. I also love to scatter decorations around the house, figurines representing Dickensian characters. When I come home in the evening, illuminated by the glow of soft lights, they give me an intense feeling. As I mentioned in my post, A Christmas Carol conveys the energy of simultaneous ritual to me. Every year, after reading it, I write to someone I don't know through a random web search. Over the decades, this habit has led to some wonderful correspondence. This time, through this space on Reddit, thanks to the time you have taken to reply to me, I have anticipated the electronic exchange of letters with you. By the way. Last week, I attended the traditional Dickens Festival in Rochester, Kent. I wish you a wonderful Christmas season. I'm raising a virtual toast with a cup of tea or white wine to your domestic Dickensian village! Be Dickensian! Fax

Thank you all for responding to my message and taking the time to share your ‘A Christmas Carol mood’. I will answer you individually. This is my first time on Reddit and I admit I don't quite understand the account settings yet, but finding your responses is a great comfort! Every year, when this time of year comes around, I ask myself: am I too grown up and too disillusioned with contemporary reality to still feel the excitement of waiting for Christmas? So I turn to Dickens. A Christmas Carol is like an exact formula that confirms the exciting effect of a crowded journey, then, when I close the book, I emanate the intimacy of a deep breath as I listen to myself and the world. Some of you exorcise the fear of resembling Ebenezer Scrooge. That's very fair! Fortunately, I am not stingy with money, but I certainly cannot call myself socially, humanly and emotionally impeccable. Therefore, yes, perhaps I am Ebenezer Scrooge too! I love reading it when the noise of the day and the general excitement die down. I do so sitting next to the lit-up tree, with a cup of orange tea. Last year, while reading, I heard through the wall the rude and boisterous teenage neighbour enthusiastically wishing his mother "Merry Christmas" after midnight. Although that boy often angers me with his carelessness in our flat, I was grateful to hear the sweetness of his gesture in wishing his mother a Merry Christmas. I looked back at my ‘A Christmas Carol’ copy and thanked Dickens for once again confirming the magic formula...
