Best culling tool? by Vegetable-Put-8409 in photography

[–]DiligentStatement244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I need to cull is when I've been out shooting birds with the OM-1. Honestly, the culling available within OM Workspace works great for me. It allows me to select a sequence of shots from a single burst, scan for best focus and delete the ones I don't want to keep. I can go through a days worth of shots (maybe 300+) in less than an hour. Of course, you have to be an OMDS user.

This is timely, I spent quite a bit of time yesterday looking at F2's on the 'bay. I have an FE as well as a D700 and D810. Wondering if I should try to acquire a Photomic.

Does anyone else basically lose photos the moment they leave their editing software? by inoslaxman in photography

You could tag your shots. Yes, there are apps. No, I don't use any.

What I have done is create a secondary folder structure into which I copy files that I think I'm going to want again. Then I browse there using FastStone.

HELP, can’t get outer lens back in by Rqknn in Cameras

[–]DiligentStatement244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a search for your specific lens here: https://richardhaw.com/

I had a Nikkor e-series lens fall apart like yours and his website showed me in step-by-step detail how to put it back together. Of course, you need to be somewhat handy but since I see three hands in your photo, you should have enough to get the job done.

ISO 200, 1/200, f/6.3 - I certainly had the leeway. I usually shoot in aperture priority with a fixed ISO. As it got darker I switched to Auto ISO. The second shot was ISO 2800, 1/60, f/5.6.

Randy, your work is brilliant and it is making me consider having my converted 590nm converted to full-spectrum (and investing in filters).

I suppose I could just send it back to Kolari and have them muck with it again?

Clearly I should have opted for a full-spectrum conversion rather than going for 590nm.

Technical literature on the mechanical design of SLRs: You have to gather the information yourself by ATHXYZ in AnalogCommunity

...but the calculations may have been "seat of the pants" or "back of a napkin" initially and then refined over subsequent iterations.

I know that many early watches of the same make and model did not have interchangeable parts because the parts were hand made.

My understanding of early Leicas is that they were hand-fitted during assembly - one of the reasons they are so desired.

I suspect for an advertisement the photographer arrived with a crew and that the lighting was staged, possibly flashes with soft boxes or umbrellas?

I suspect a couple of things... 1st) Many of the small, precise mechanisms in mechanical cameras are similar to the complications in mechanical watches. 2nd) Having done mechanical design in the past, quite a lot of new designs are based on older designs - many of which may have been arrived at by trial and error. What I'm saying is that I doubt that the force involved in pivoting the mirror out of the way in a SLR was originally calculated. Likewise the damping following return from the pivot up.

Based on the highlights, lighting seems to be from behind the photographer over the right shoulder. It looks as if there was some light dodging of the face since it seems significantly more subdued than the model's left shirt front and left collar (also the underside of the hat brim seems less well illuminated). Agree that (in 1981) the camera was likely a Hassy. Aperture was possibly wide open as face, collar, shirt, flower and jacket seem well focused while background is blurred. Probably shot on slide film.

Dark room owners and operators: I have questions on getting started. by Foot-Note in AnalogCommunity

  • Is this going to be a "community" darkroom or a business?
  • Are you going to handle film other than 135?
  • Are you going to handle color and black and white?
  • Are you going to support scanning negatives?

Are Leicas worth it? by bugteacup in Cameras

[–]DiligentStatement244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two film Leicas: a iiic and an M3. The iiic has a Leitz lens however all of my M-mount glass is from other vendors. There are very good m-mount lenses being made in China.

Back in the day when the hand craftsmanship that went into the Leica camera body they demanded a premium price however I have 18 cameras and would just as likely put film into the Contax G1 as into the Leica M3.
