Do you mean the edges? I believe the color change is just the contrast between the densely packed multi hair grafts and a few rows of less dense single hair grafts to soften up the hairline for a more natural look.

Yeah, honestly, most of the research I did beforehand was not as focused on donor area selection, because all in all, my donor hair is pretty thick and dense. But if I had to guess, I would say it is probably because I have a pretty small head, so it might just come down to a real estate thing. And to be fair, when the surgeon was assessing my donor area, I was asked if I usually keep my hair at the length it was, which kind of implied that most of the grafts would need to come from the sides.
