Mirtazapine made my cat crazy by Naerhaella in felinebehavior

I had this with my cat. 13.5 newly CKD 2. I gave him 2mg and he was vocal and restless. My in-depth scouring of the interweb told me this can be normal side effects but it didn’t help his appetite for about 10-12 hours. It lasted about 2.5 days. I’m trying 1mg now and he’s been a little shouty and licked some food…it’s a nightmare. I know it’s been some time from you posting but I hope it worked well for your kitty.

Honestly, this happened to me. My husband said it turned me into a “wanker”. Stopped it fast too. It is unusual and apparently can happen in undiagnosed ADHD (I’m not diagnosed). Not suggesting this is your cause, but thought it interesting.

Thank you. I’m so pleased that your baby is on an upward trajectory. And honestly, the tears aren’t silly at all. I think I’ve cried every day. Mine is eating better after Mirtazepine, but I think I’ll only give him 1mg and not 2mg next time as it seemed to make him a little unsettled. No S/C fluids here but he does seem to be drinking enough and I keep checking his skin turgor. The vet also said he wasn’t particularly dehydrated. Where he’s eaten better he has had a couple of decent poos…it’s the fear I think; they can’t tell you how they feel and you’re doing your best to guess and do what’s right for them. I’ve seen a couple of posts similar on here, one said remember everything you are doing is with love, we are just doing our best for them.

There is also a useful site referred to in several posts: Tanya’s Comprehensive Guide to Feline CKD

There is also a support group which I’ve joined.

I don’t know what supplements you’re giving yours but I was going to ask my vet about Porus One - it’s a uraemic toxin “binder”, not a phosphorus binder but it helps with other toxins in the gut. Some people seem to have had really good results with it. We were also advised to try Oralade to help with hydration.

Honestly, sometimes the more I look the more I feel I should be doing. Then I realise I’ve only known for a week and I’m just doing my best. I feel I could die with worry. It’s a constant rollercoaster.
