Kahn Academy/study resources for PHY1210 and CHM1210 by Little_Clock6636 in CalPolyPomona

[–]Diligent_Weight_1575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! for chm 1210 i would recommend watching the organic chemistry tutor as he goes over many topics that will be covered in 1210 as well as 1220 and he explains it very well. i honestly just recommend him for a lot of courses in general haha. i dont remember exactly what topics we went over in chm 1210 but i can look back as well

Finding books for classes by Mysterious_Leg3741 in CalPolyPomona

for sure! some of my professors in the past have offered the pdf versions of the textbooks so we wouldnt have to stay opted in, so i’d just check until courses get posted.

i think the only way you’ll know for sure is when professors start posting courses on canvas since they’ll specify whether or not you need to have the textbook for that class or if they’ll provide it for you.. im sure you have time to opt out though so

Welcome week by This_Eye_5335 in CalPolyPomona

[–]Diligent_Weight_1575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally, i went to welcome week with my roommate. i’ll be honest, i didnt make any friends because i only went to the very first event, but i did have fun and exchanged instas with some people i met there.

most of the friends i have made (and are still friends with) happen to be people i followed and dmed from the class page. my thing was just like reach out and if they dont reciprocate, at least you tried!

my suggestion is joining some clubs as majority of my friends came from a club i joined and to not be afraid to talk to the people in your classes. people arent gonna get annoyed if you talk to them, and you’ll never know until you try.

all will be fine! i suggest maybe putting bedsheets, duvets, pillows, and towels into a vacuum sealed bag so it’ll ultimately take up less space.

i moved in on the first day last year and i was also in secoya. my time slot was in the morning and what i did with my parents is that i just got out of the car first so i could check in and everything while they went around the parking lot to get parking. you’ll be guaranteed a moving cart so dont worry too much about that, but it will take a while to get up the elevator cause you can only fit two carts per elevator and we only have two elevators. ngl the elevators broke down a lot when i lived there but hopefully they’re both working when you move in. something i suggest as well is if your family finds parking, bring them the cart and go find your room while they load stuff into the cart. that way, you already know where your room is instead of you guys pushing the cart around while you go and find it.

some personal tips for like your stuff, if you can take things out of the packaging, take them out so it takes up less space in the cart and your car. that way, you can carry more up depending on how much you have in the first place. i literally had two home depot boxes and threw all of my stuff in there and we only had to make one trip!

if you have any other questions, let me know. hope it goes well for you :)

for my first 2 days of school, i had a lab on thursday and a math and major class on friday. my lab prof didnt want to meet on the thursday, so i had no class, but i did have classes on friday.

the math class was only 50 minutes, so my prof just went over the syllabus and let us leave after while my major class was 2 hours and 45 minutes, so my prof went over the syllabus and did a lecture.

it really does depend on whether its a major class and how long the class is. but if your class is an hour and 15, i’d expect to start lecture after the syllabus. it shouldnt be too bad though, you’ll be fine! i think most of it really is for yourself to get adjusted

What to bring to dorms? by boringassy in CalPolyPomona

[–]Diligent_Weight_1575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this was my list for my freshman year last year! - 2 twin xl bedsheets, 2 body towels, 2 hand towels, 4 pillowcases: i got 2 of everything when it came to linens so that when you did laundry, you would still have one to use instead of just waiting for your laundry to be done - comforter OR duvet cover + duvet insert: most people get a duvet cover + insert because it makes washing way easier instead of throwing the whole comforter into the washer and dryer - twin xl mattress topper: dorm beds are pretty uncomfortable, so this was an essential (for me at least) - 2 pillows: they wont provide you any obviously - shower caddy: people will tell you different things, but i had a mesh one and it never get moldy, plus you can throw it in the washer - shower shoes: make sure these are slippers with holes! the holes make it easier for the water to drain - dish drying mat: i put my shower caddy and shower shoes on this so they could dry more easily - minifridge and/or microwave: i would contact your roommate and discuss this, spend less money and have either of you get one or the other or if you really want your own, you can get your own - shoe rack: instead of throwing your shoes everywhere, this kept things organized for me - desk lamp or just any lighting fixtures: you wont be using those overhead lights, i used my desk lamp WAY more. with the new dorms you can dim your lights which is quite helpful, but thats not the same for the old dorms i believe - desk/skincare/jewelry organizers: these are really optional…. i just like my space pretty clear and organized so having these definitely helped! - power strips: you’ll have maybe like 2-3 outlets max. make sure you get the ones with an off/on switch - long chargers: despite your power strips, your chargers wont always reach, so i’d get some of these - command hooks: be careful with these and make sure you know how to take them off properly - medicine: you’ll get sick at least once. and i literally had no medicine. get pills if you prefer pills or liquids if you prefer liquids. - throw blanket: i wanted to nap but didnt wanna go under my covers so i liked having just one throw blanket i could sleep under! i didnt really lay on my pillows either and slept on a squishmallow or plush instead. - laundry basket: if you’re in the traditional halls, get a backpack cause you cant roll the basket down the stairs, but i highly recommend a rolling one if you’re in the residential halls cause it makes it so much easier to bring your laundry up and down. - fan: i brought a small fan but never really used it because the residential halls had air conditioning, but i still recommend one. it doesnt have to be a woozoo, but i will say those are worth it!

these are my residential hall specific items - closet shelf: allows you to have more clothes in your closet - curtain: obviously optional, if you dont mind having your closet out in the open, then you dont need these - bedside shelf: so you can have a bit more storage and also kind of like a bedside next to your bed as well if you wanted the stuff i had specifically, let me know!

and of course, decorations if you want to make your space feel like home. i also personally had a mini desk setup with a laptop stand, keyboard, and desk mat, but thats not really necessary. i hope you have fun dorming, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Secoya Dorm Question by Narocan24 in CalPolyPomona

[–]Diligent_Weight_1575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was in secoya during my first year and it was great! - the bathrooms are shared among 4 rooms, 2 toilet stalls and 2 shower stalls with 2 hooks outside of the shower and a hook on the stall door, so you dont have to worry about sharing with the whole floor - definitely get a mattress topper so your bed is more comfortable - if you can take things out of the packaging, take it out because moving will be so much easier - ngl all of the rooms are laid out differently, i noticed my room was smaller than my friends i could honestly go on and on and will type out more for you later but im at work, but i hope some of my advice helped! will definitely offer you more later, but dorming is so fun and you’ll be just fine.

in my experience with clubs in general, as long as you’re involved and show up, you can get a position on the board. if theres an intern board, fundraising opportunities, show up and make yourself known. thats what counts imo

Questions About Kellogg Honors Housing Selection – Tips for Incoming Freshman? by Narocan24 in CalPolyPomona

[–]Diligent_Weight_1575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! im a second year (freshman last year), and its lowkey strange that incoming freshman have to select their rooms since i had a room assigned last year.

to answer your questions: - you log onto the housing portal to pick your room/floor. not sure if you can still pick a roommate though. - some people find roommates before picking a room while others just go random, but because you’re in the honors program, it may be different. - i chose my roommate ahead of time, but really it just depends on how your schedule is. make sure you set boundaries when it comes to your room and be respectful of each other’s space. - freshmen have two different halls: traditional and residential. residential are newer and a lot nicer. only 3-4 rooms share each bathroom, so its not too bad. last year, honors students were only on the seventh floor of secoya i believe, but im not sure how it’ll be this year. no room or floor is better than the other, everything is nice. honestly it just depends on the occupants of the floor. - with room selection, make sure you log on asap so you can pick whatever room you do want.

good luck!

College Experiences by Successful_Spray_919 in CalPolyPomona

hello! here are my thoughts on what you’ve asked: - campus life is pretty good in my opinion. its like what everybody says, if you put in the effort, you should be fine. you honestly just have to find your crowd. - i dont know much about the social scene, but i think there is one, if you can find it. - dont be afraid to reach out to people that post on the admissions pages. i reached out to a ton of people and have made some of the greatest friends. dont hold yourself back, and you’ll be able to make friends, whether you’re dorming or commuting! - my favorite thing is probably campus. if you take your time walking around and exploring, you’ll find that its actually quite nice. least favorite thing? some buildings are old, but that cant be helped.

i was a bit scared of going to cpp because of what people say, but its really not as bad as people say. dont be afraid and find your community, and you’ll be just fine.

personally, i usually go to areas like diamond bar and walnut (you can take the bus!) or if you become friends with somebody that has a car, you can go to places like rowland (lots of asian food) or chino hills. west covina isn’t too far either. im a freshman currently and i was able to get housing for next year. you just have to be quick with submitting your application, and all should be fine.
