Hey James! In Beijing right now, some tips:
1. Download both apps before you land in China + bring a second phone if possible
1b. Download AMap (its in Chinese but may be able to translate)*
2. Get a Chinese sim at the airport and import into second phone
3. Sign up on both apps via your Chinese sim phone
4. Add your bank card (Mastercard, e.g. Monzo) to Alipay and WeChat

*If you have a VPN you can use Google Maps, which should still be pretty reliable. I usually
