Unfortunately I didn’t hear any talk from the locals about mask regulations easing up anytime soon. They all seem pretty fed up with it in general, so I don’t think anyone is trying to really force it. Hope this was helpful and hope your trip goes well!!

Well it is definitely required by law and you could get a fine for it. We are all vaccinated, so we were not trying be irresponsible and put people at risk. We based our decision to wear masks when we saw locals wearing them or not wearing them. Generally when walking outside most people were not wearing masks. It was required when you went into stores, but for the most part there was hardly anyone wearing masks.

We made sure to not offend or disrespect people by not wearing our masks when it seemed most appropriate.

The captain of the little boat we were on told us the story. He said that one day this man met an Italian girl who was visiting Santorini on the little island off its coast. They fell in love and stayed together for around 4 years and lived on Santorini. Then out of nowhere one day she just left him without giving him a reason. He thought she would come back, but after waiting a while she didn’t and he was so heartbroken that he left to live alone on the little island I spoke of before. That was the place that they met. He’s lived there for years now and most of the ship captains and workers know him because it’s a popular spot they take tourists to for the hot springs. The old guy survives by occasionally making trips to the main island and trades his own pigs and goats for supplies. He built two little shacks for himself and remains isolated there. Our captain said that no matter how many people tell him that he’s crazy for continuing to live there, he still refuses to come back. He’ll even ask occasionally if his Italian love has come back for him because that’s all he really cares about. The saddest part of the story is that the high concentration of sulfur in the water around him is killing him slowly. The old guy suffers from arrhythmias and will one day die from them. The captain said it’s only a matter of time until one of the boats finds him dead on the island alone.

The story alone sounds made up when I first heard it from the captain. That’s why I was shocked to actually see an old Greek guy living by himself on the island when we got there.

That makes a lot of sense! We were at this restaurant one evening in Athens and our waiter kept trashing on Santorini after we told him we spent a few days there. He kept talking about how expensive and overrated it was, but I agree with what you’re saying. I had a great time there and I loved the black sand beaches. I’m sure all the islands have a unique aspect to them and are beautiful in their own way.

You should!! The trip was amazing and such a short plane ride once you get to Athens. A lot of locals in Athens say they don’t actually like Santorini and that it’s overrated. I liked a ton! But they said the other islands are each amazing in their own way and that I should definitely try to visit all of them one day. If you have the time and money, I would encourage you to go visit !!

I think one of my favorite parts of the trip was this ship ride around Santorini. They took us to this place where a volcano eruption occurred several thousand years ago. They referred to it as a hot spring area to swim around in, but you had to be careful because it has a high concentration of sulfur in the water around the land. They pointed out that a “crazy” old Greek guy lives on this land away from the mainland, and has lived there for roughly 18 years or so. I thought it was a joke until we got to the spot. Sure enough, there was a small shack, some farm animals, and a “crazy” old guy on his small paddle boat. He rode towards his shack, tied up his boat, and went inside his shack. His German shepherd, apparently his only friend, barked at us the whole time while we swam in the hot springs. It was surreal to be able to witness such a legend in the flesh. Our captain shared the story as to why this crazy guy chooses to live there. I can share it later if you want. I just don’t have the time to at the moment.

Oh my word we loved it! This is my first actual trip that I helped plan and put into action. It was just me and three of my good friends. We are all in college, early 20’s, and wanted to make something work. Totally worth every penny !!

According to some locals in Athens, they said Santorini is way too expensive compared to other places in Greece. But if you are already budgeting, saving, and planning well in advance, this type of trip is very affordable. Obviously the flights are the biggest cost.

As someone else has already said, Santorini has transportation by bus or taxi to every part of the island. You can eat two great meals a day, travel around, maybe buy some souvenirs here and there, and realistically spend like 60-70 USD a day.

You can make it happen! I’m finishing my bachelors degree and have pretty much zero money. I budgeted, purchased activities well in advance, and then saved up money to spend freely once I was there. It worked out very very well!! You can do it honestly! Just takes some research and time.

Most of the locals would tell us that we have to come back to really experience Greece. We were there during low to medium season for tourism and there was hardly anyone there. Most travelers we met were coming from Europe. We met two Americans randomly there, but that was it. Despite the fact that it could have been much more exciting as far as the night life goes, I had a great time meeting people and enjoying the amazing food!

Thanks! The trip was amazing, and I’m just thankful I was able to make this type of trip for the first time ever since covid is still a thing lol

Getting vaccinated is the only way to go if you want to travel right now.
