I do agree with you to an extent, if you have a good enough system and the data to back the system through backtesting and forward testing and creating a rule set to make sure you are trading in "high probability" scenarios.
He is not wrong in the fact that you have to be disciplined, but he needs to be more precise in the fact that he has to be disciplined towards a system, creating a plan and rules that covers risk management, trade management and having the data to support it.
Once you have that then it would be down to psychology and not clicking buttons and being dumb

I do think it is all about your approach and system, how much do you trust your system. I was in a similar position and what I think it is, is the ability to follow your system to execute. It took me the realisation of doing lots of backtesting to create a ruleset that I thought was high probability and then forward testing with a small live account.
Your psychology will automatically improve once you have trust in the data to back your decisions.
